#6 Stanford Steady in Season Opener

STANFORD, Calif. - The sixth ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team utilized its depth Friday night to open its season with a win at the NorCal Quad Meet hosted at San Jose State.

The Cardinal finished with a score of 195.425, with at least two gymnasts finishing in the top-three individual scoring in each event and recording the highest team score in every event.

Stanford was dominant on vault - highlighted by senior captain Nicole Dayton's vault that scored a meet-best 9.950. The score matched Dayton's career best, earned during last year's NCAA Super Six.

The Cardinal showcased its talent in the event with all five gymnasts hitting their vaults and scoring a 9.775 or higher.

Getting the victory was a group effort as the team saw performances from 10 different gymnasts, including the debuts of freshmen Melissa Chuang and Maggie Teets. Chuang had a particularly impressive collegiate introduction finishing with the third-highest individual score on both vault and floor exercise.

Stanford showed its depth on balance beam with five of six gymnasts scoring 9.775 or higher. The night's highest scores belonged to first-team All-Americans Amanda Spinner and Ivana Hong both scoring 9.875.

The Cardinal was led on uneven bars by senior captain and All-American Ashley Morgan with a score of 9.800. Morgan had a great opening to the 2013 season contributing a score of 9.775 on both the balance beam and vault.

Senior Shona Morgan and freshman Melissa Chuang tied for the third-highest scores of the meet on floor exercise recording scores of 9.775.
Morgan provided consistency for the Cardinal producing the third-highest meet score on beam and uneven bars to match her floor performance.

The Cardinal finished ahead of San Jose State (192.875), UC Davis (191.400) and Sacramento State (191.100).

Stanford will see San Jose State again in its next meet when it heads to Tucson, Ariz. on January 12 where it will also take on Arizona and Illinois.
