British Men Selected for European Championships



British Gymnastics has announced the male gymnasts selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2014 artistic gymnastics European Championships held in Sofia from the 12-25th May.

The senior team is made up of some of the world’s very best gymnasts, all of whom are Olympians, champions and medal winners on the world stage.

Double 2012 Olympic medallist and triple-European medallist from 2013 Max Whitlock (South Essex) will be one of the top contenders for glory as will Beijing Olympian Daniel Keatings (Huntingdon) who could be in with chance of an historic hat trick of European pommel horse titles.

London Olympians Sam Oldham (Huntingdon), Dan Purvis (Southport) and Kristian Thomas (Earls) have all won medals at European or World Championships and complete the formidable British line-up who will be aiming to defend their team title from 2012 - the last time the European Championships included a senior team competition.

The team are joined by five junior gymnasts who have already established themselves as some of the most promising gymnast in the world having dominated at the European Championships over the last decade. Having swept the medals at the last junior European Championships held in 2012, Brinn Bevan (South Essex) the 2013 European Youth Olympic Champion, 2014 British junior champion Nile Wilson (Leeds) and 2014 British all-around bronze medallist Jay Thompson (South Essex) lead the team supported by up-and-coming stars Giarnni-Regini Moran (Europa) and Joe Fraser (Birmingham).

The 2014 European Championships includes competitions for women and men, senior and juniors.

The British women’s team will be the first to compete. Senior gymnasts Hannah Whelan, Rebecca Tunney, Rebecca Downie, Claudia Fragapane and Ruby Harrold and junior gymnasts Amy Tinkler, Ellie Downie, Catherine Lyons, Rhyannon Jones and Teal Grindle will be in action from 14-18th May. The championships includes competitions for junior all-around and apparatus events and senior team and apparatus events with the men’s competitions taking place from the 21st-25th.
