Gymnast of the Week: National Team Member Amelia Hundley
Gymnast of the Week: National Team Member Amelia Hundley
Early Life
On January 21, 1998, Amelia Hundley was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the city where she would eventually train and excel in the sport of gymnastics.
Amelia’s mother, Sharon Hundley, owned a dance studio where she was a tumbling teacher, coaching Amelia during the week. Sharon’s two sons were taking gymnastics classes at the studio, and it wasn’t long before four-year old Amelia followed in their footsteps.
Hundley flew through the compulsory portion of USA Gymnastics, and by 2008, she was competing level 10 at Cincinnati Gymnastics under head coach Mary Lee Tracy. In her first State meet that year, Hundley placed first on the uneven bars and second in the all-around. At the 2014 Regional Championships, she took the all-around, bars, and floor titles, qualifying to the Junior Olympic National Championships.

Junior International Elite
2009 was the year Hundley qualified into Junior International Elite, and she has been running through her competition since. That season, she competed at the CGA Coaches Spectacular and IGI Chicago Style competitions, claiming gold in the all-around at both. She defended her CGA Coaches Cup title in 2010, and came second in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge, qualifying to the VISA Championships. Hundley finished 19th in the all-around and 16th on uneven bars in her first elite championships.
In 2011, Hundley began the take control of the elite world, successfully competing in major championships alongside the best gymnasts in the country. She placed 6th in the all-around and 4th on floor at the US Classic, and improved her VISA Championships rankings by taking 5th all-around, 7th on bars, and 4th on floor. For this performance, Hundley achieved one of her gymnastics dreams, earning a position on the US Junior National Team. Later that year, she represent the USA at the Junior Japan International, where she won silver on vault, floor and in the all-around, and claimed bronze on bars.
Continuing her reign of Junior National dominance into 2012 and 2013, Hundley competed at the US Secret Classic and US Nationals last year, where she claimed a silver and bronze in the all-around competitions. She has shown continuous improvement in not only her gymnastics, but in her mental fortitude and toughness. With every competition, Hundley seems more confident in herself, and her physical ability.
US Senior National Team Membership
In the season of 2014, Amelia Hundley achieved yet another goal, securing a spot on the US Senior National Team. The opportunity arose when she improved her all-around score from a 55.700 to a 56.500 at the 2014 P&G Championships, finishing 6th. She also placed 8th on bars and 7th on beam and floor. With the conclusion of the competition, Hundley was named to the team!
In her Senior National Team Membership debut, Amelia helped team USA defeat Brazil and Mexico at the Pan American Championships held in Toronto, Canada, taking the Team Gold back to the States. Hundley also claimed a 6th place all-around finish, 7th on balance beam, and 8th on bars.
Heading to Gainesville
On February 13, 2013, the University of Florida’s gymnastics team added another big elite name to their already start-studded roster when Amelia Hundley publicly announced her commitment to the team. She will graduate high school in 2016, and begin her freshmen year among other gymnastics greats who will be joining her at the same time: Alyssa Baumann of WOGA, Rachel Gowey of Chows, and Ashton Locklear of Everest.
