Alyssa Baumann will not compete at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials due to injury. The World Olympic Gymnastics Academy athlete sustained an elbow injury in training yesterday and has torn several ligaments and muscles. She is coming off a great performance at the P&G Championships, where she finished seventh all-around and was named to the U.S. National Team. This is incredibly unfortunate, as Baumann was headed to the U.S. Olympic Trials next weekend in San Jose, California, but is now out of contention for Rio.
She posted on Instagram this morning:
We wish the best for Baumann in her recovery and are excited to see her compete as a Florida Gator!
Update via USA Gymnastics:
June 30, 2016 – Alyssa Baumann of Plano, Texas/WOGA, has withdrawn from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics. Baumann injured her left elbow while training on the uneven bars on June 29. Based on early evaluations, she has torn several ligaments and muscles. Baumann is seeing her local physicians to determine the best course of treatment, but the injury precludes her from competing in the Trials.
"I'm very sad to be missing the Olympic Trials,” said Baumann. “It has always been a dream of mine to compete for a spot on the Olympic team. I will be watching and supporting the girls at both Trials and the Olympics. Thank you for everyone's support."
