Alabama Freshmen Ready to Shine for the Crimson Tide
In this week's installment of freshman class previews, FloGymnastics takes a look at Alabama's dynamic group of newcomers, who bring power, elegance, talent, and experience to the Crimson Tide.

The freshman class features four gymnasts looking to carry Alabama's momentum in the the absence of Lauren Beers and Carley Sims. The freshmen include:

Wynter Childers: 2015 JO national all-around, vault, and balance beam champion
Caitlin Cole: Level 10 gymnast
Maddie Desch: Four-time U.S. National Team member, 2014 World Championship gold medal team member
Shea Mahoney: Three-time JO national qualifier

Alabama coach Dana Duckworth on the freshmen class:
"Each year we not only look for the best talent, but most importantly the character and quality of the person. Our incoming class exemplifies the 'best of the best' not only on the competition floor but in the classroom as well. Their personalities and experience fit the passion and family environment that lies at core of Alabama gymnastics' championships legacy."

Wynter Childers

Childers is a freshman from Spearfish, South Dakota, where she was a level 10 at Spearfish Gymnastics Academy. Childers was a three-time Nastia Liukin Cup qualifier as a level 10 gymnast along with the 2015 JO National all-around, vault, and balance beam champion. Childers will bring great energy and pizzazz to the Tide this season. Her floor will be a crowd-pleaser and a must-watch routine this season, as she brings huge tumbling paired with captivating choreography. Look for Childers to make a big splash early and contribute to the Tide's lineup and success.

Caitlin Cole

Cole is from Augusta, Georgia, where she trained as a level 10 at Haydens Gymnastics Academy. She was an additional signee to this freshman class after the original signing period. Cole's best event is beam, which showcases her beautiful lines in her dance and leaps. Cole will provide depth to the team on beam and will gain experience in her freshman season.

Maddie Desch

Desch is from Lenexa, Kansas, where she trained at Great American Gymnastics Express. Desch had a stellar elite career, which was the highlighted as a part of the 2014 gold medal-winning World Championship Team. In May 2016, Desch retired from elite gymnastics following a back fracture. A solid all-around gymnast, Desch displays beautiful artistry, difficult skills, and unique combinations. Desch's gymnastics displays a harmonious mix of grace and power. She shines on both beam and floor where her power and elegance can shine through. Look for Desch to be in full swing and a huge contributor when it counts for the Tide.

Shea Mahoney

Mahoney hails from Algonquin, Illinois, where she trained at Legacy Elite Gymnastics. She is a strong gymnast who is training hard to make the lineup this season. Mahoney is going to be in position to push those in the lineup and compete for a spot. Look for Mahoney to grow as a freshman this season and develop in an elite Alabama program.
