Jay Hogue has been named an assistant coach for the University of Denver gymnastics team. Hogue returns to Denver after spending five years as an assistant at the University of Georgia. Hogue was an assistant at Denver in 2011 and 2012. Before coaching at the collegiate level, Hogue was a club coach and spent most of his career at Orlando Metro Gymnastics.

DENVER -- Jay Hogue will be the next assistant coach of the University of Denver women's gymnastics team, head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart announced Monday. 

"I'm very excited to welcome Jay back to our DU Gymnastics family," Kutcher-Rinehart said. "We're thrilled to have him, his wife Lisa and sons Pierce and Colin back in Denver again.

"I've always respected his coaching abilities and his character, and he embraces our philosophy of character, teamwork and excellence. He will be a great complement to Linas and myself on the coaching staff."

Hogue returns to Denver where he was an assistant coach for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia.

He twice earned NACGC/W regional co-Assistant Coach of the Year honors, first with Denver in 2012 and then again with Georgia in 2014. In total, he has coached seven All-Americans--many earning multiple honors each--and an individual national champion on bars.

"I am excited about the opportunity to come back to the University of Denver. It is like coming home," Hogue said. "The university has everything for the student-athlete to be extremely successful, and I am thrilled head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart has asked me back to continue the rich tradition of DU Gymnastics and be a part of the continued ascension of the program."

From 2013-2017, Hogue served as Georgia's primary bars coach while also coaching vault in 2013. In 2016, he helped lead Brittany Rogers to an NCAA individual national title on bars. Last season, two Gymdogs secured All-American honors on bars at the NCAA National Championships, and two others earned all-SEC nods on that event as well. Throughout his time at UGA, gymnasts on his events of bars and vault earned a combined 18 All-American honors--including 10 in 2013 alone.

During his time with DU in 2011 and 2012, Hogue coached the Pioneers' vault and bars squads and helped secure top-20 final national rankings on each event both years. In each 2011 and 2012, at least one Pioneer gymnast under Hogue's leadership finished the season nationally-ranked on vault. In 2012, the team tied what was then a program record on vault, and Moriah Martin finished the season ranked in the top 10 nationally on the event.

Before coaching at the collegiate level, Hogue spent more than 20 years as a professional member of USA Gymnastics coaching all four events. He holds a bachelor's degree in liberal studies with an emphasis in engineering and physics, and a minor in mathematics from the University of Central Florida, as well as an associate of arts degree from Valencia Community College.

Hogue will be the team's primary floor coach. He replaces Robert Ladanyi, who accepted a position at the University of Utah earlier in June.
