Overview
Team USA blew the competition out of the water today at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Team finals, winning the gold by over eight points. Russia took the silver medal and China came away with the bronze. The five team members of the gold-medal winning team are Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman.
The Final Five, as the ladies named themselves, were absolutely on fire the entire competition. They came out of the gate full speed and posted a team score of a 46.866, their highest event score and the highest event score of any team the entire competition. Hernandez vaulted a strong Yurchenko double to lead-off the day for a 15.1. Raisman followed with a rock solid Amanar for a 15.833 and Biles topped of the rotation with her jaw-dropping Amanar for a 15.933.
USA moved to bars where they continued to build their momentum. Biles started with her typical high-flying releases to post a 14.8. Douglas showed extremely clean lines accented by her big, floating releases for a 15.766. Bars specialist Kocian hit a nearly flawless routine that earned a 15.933.
Beam came third where USA displayed confidence and precision. Raisman, Hernandez, and Biles knocked out their routines one after another, posting a 15.0, 15.233, and 15.3 respectively.
USA finished on floor with three more fantastic routines. Hernandez showed her signature expression and sass and earned a 14.833. Raisman drilled her landings in one of the best routines we've seen to score a 15.366. USA was way ahead of the pack and Biles just needed to complete her routine to secure team gold. But as Biles always does, she performed insane skills while making them appear effortless. Her 15.8 made it official and USA defended their second consecutive Olympic team gold.
Russia started on bars, their strongest event, and they scored a 46.166 lead by Aliya Mustafina's 15.933. They had trouble on beam when Angelina Melnikova fell but they picked it right back up and nailed the other two routines. They finished strong on vault topped off with Maria Paseka's gorgeous 15.7 Amanar. The team finished with a 176.688 to push them past China.
China scored the second highest score at qualifications but after a couple falls, ended up third in team finals. Their best event of the day came on bars, even though they had a fall they posted a 45.007, lead by Fan Yilin's 15.733. On their final event of floor, Shang Chunsong and Wang Yan nailed their routines with intricate twisting passes to score a 14.7 and 14.733 respectively. Unfortunately, Mao Yi fell on the final routine and China ended with a 176.003, six tenths behind Russia.
