Concerns are quickly growing around the construction of the gymnastics venue for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The cost of the Olympic Gymnastic Centre has more than doubled -- from an initially projected $81 million to about $200 million, according to Inside the Games.
The cost increase is reportedly due to several key factors, including a rise in construction prices across Japan and a focus on making the venue more earthquake-resistant.
The venue developer is Shimizu Corporation, which also constructed Izu Velodrome -- the track cycling venue for Tokyo 2020. The 12,000-seat spectator gymnastics facility is projected to be completed by October 2019.
This venue, located in the Tokyo Bay Area, will reportedly stage boccia during the Paralympics and then will become a convention and exhibition center after the Games.
