Shortly following the birth of her baby girl Alisa this June, Aliya Mustafina has decided she will be returning to gymnastics training on September 3, according to Russian news source TASS.
Mustafina reportedly called Russian National team coach Valentina Rodionenko to ask for an invitation to the "round-up" (national team camp) on September 3, and her request was granted. Rodionenko noted that she has her eyes set on competing at the 2018 European Championships, held August 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Generally, the European Championships are held in the spring, but with the 2018 competition being much later than normal, Rodionenko said Mustafina will have time to prepare for it and at that point he will determine if she is ready for the 2018 World Championships.
Given Mustafina's ability to return quickly from injury or breaks from training, we expect her to come back strong in 2018 and be an asset for her country at the first World team competition since the Rio Olympics where she helped Russia earn silver and also won all-around bronze.
Mustafina shared this Instagram post in which she writes about her love for the sport and how much she has missed it:
