New Skills at JO Nationals

As you know, we covered the 2010 JO National Championships in Dallas over the weekend. While there were tons of great performances and stories to be shared, some exciting news from the weekend hasn't yet gotten much attention.

If you haven't heard, there were 2 new skills added to the JO Code of Points at this year's Nationals! The first new skill came from former US Junior National Team member Asi Peko of Brown's Gymnastics in Las Vegas. Asi came back to competition this year after recovering from injuries and decided to compete level 10. Asi had been training an aerial on beam but says she kept landing it on one foot, so she and her coach had the idea to connect it into a scale, similar the the front aerial to scale that Nastia Liukin is known for doing on beam. You can somewhat see the skill in this video from the JO Nationals training day:

Asi had a slight wobble on the skill in competition, but managed to maintain the connection and show off a beautiful scale. She placed 3rd All Around, 1st on floor and tied for 2nd on vault and 8th on beam. Here is the interview with Asi following the competition:

The second named skill of the meet came from Cammi Muhr of Grand Junction Gymnastics in Colorado. Cammi competed a new beam dismount, a laid out front double twist off of one foot. Cammi tied for 6th place on beam in the Senior D division with a 9.45 and 25th All Around. Here is a video of "The Muhr" from training before the meet:

Here is a full beam routine video of Cammi's from the gymnastike coverage of the 2010 Pikes Peak Cup in February. She competed the dismount there but didn't quite stand it up like she does in the above video.

Congrats to both Asi and Cammi!
