WVU Earns First Big 12 Win against Iowa State in "Beauty and the Beast" Meet

West Virginia University took home its first Big 12 win tonight in the WVU coliseum against the Cyclones of Iowa State during the second “Beauty and the Beast” meet. The Mountaineers beat the Cyclones with a season high score of 196.150-194.825.

Senior Kaylyn Millick led the Mountaineers as she claimed the all-around title with a score of 39.375. The Washington, Pa., native claimed three top finishes and tied for the uneven bars win. Millick scored a 9.8 or better in each event. Millick is now the third Mountaineer to cross the 1,000 point mark with 1,016.125 points.

Senior Elizabeth Stranahan of ISU scored a 39.05 in the all-around putting her in second place. Stranahan was followed by teammate and fellow junior Henrietta Green, who came in third with a 39.00.

Starting the meet on vault, the Mountaineers came out strong with a season best total of 49.2. Freshman Jaida Lawrence earned her third consecutive title in the event with a score of 9.875. Senior Alaska Richardson and Kaylyn Millick tied for second on vault with 9.85s.  Sophmore Dayah Hayley opened the rotation for the Mountaineers and earned a career-best 9.825, finishing in fourth. Junior Hope Sloanhoffer took the fifth-place position with a 9.8. Also in the rotation for the Mountaineers was junior Bethany Yurko, who scored a career best 9.775 in her first vault appearance of the season.

ISU began the first rotation on bars, earning a team total of 49.2.

The Mountaineers continued to hit in the second rotation with a 49.2 showing on bars. A total of five gymnasts earned season or career bests, as the 9.8s continued to roll in for the Mountaineers. Sloanhoffer and Millick tied for the win with 9.875s, a season best for both gymnasts. Finishing third, junior Erica Smith matched her career-best score of 9.85. Freshmen duo Gina Costa and Lawrence each scored a career-high 9.8 and tied for fourth place.

The Cyclones totaled a 48.625 on vault in the second rotation.

WVU tallied a 48.85 on beam in the third rotation. Things looked bad on beam as Sloanhoffer began the rotation for the Mountaineers with a fall. Momentum was regained with Richardson’s 9.7 performance. Beth Deal finished second overall in the event with a score of 9.85. Millick claimed the third-place position with a 9.825. Junior Amanda Carpenter finished sixth overall with a 9.75, while sophomore Lia Salzano earned a 9.725 mark.

Suffering a couple falls, ISU was able to earn a 48.625 on floor, but finished strong with a win on beam with a score of 48.875, their only win of the day. Michelle Shealy took first on beam with a 9.875

The Mountaineers were able to seal their win over the Cyclones with a 48.9 floor mark. Richardson proved to be a solid lineup anchor once again, scoring 9.85 and finishing in a three-way tie for first with ISU’s Green and Milan Ivory. Millick finished fourth with a 9.825, the meet’s second-best mark, while Sloanhoffer tallied 9.775 and Goldschrafe and Haley earned 9.725s.

The Mountaineers return to the road next week and travel to No. 17 Maryland for a quad meet with Rutgers and George Washington on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 5 p.m., at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md.
