Top Recruit Alex McMurtry Makes Collegiate Decision
One of the nation's top recruits, Alex McMurtry of Richmond Olympiad today made her collegiate decision. Like many top recruits lately, McMurtry will be joining the Florida Gators. She is currently in her sophomore year of high school and will join the gymnastics team during the 2015-2016 school year.
McMurtry has dominated level 10 gymnastics in recent years. She is a five-time Level 10 Virginia State All-Around Champion, three-time Level 10 Regional All-Around Champion, 2-time J.O. National All Around Champion (2011 & 2012), and three-time Junior Olympic National Team Member.
McMurtry will again be a front runner for this year's J.O. National All Around title, seeking her third title in a row. McMurtry has also qualified once again to the Nastia Liukin Cup, held March 1st in Worcester, MA.
While she is a very balanced all around gymnast, she is known for her power on vault and floor and often competes a double twisting yurchenko, a vault rarely seen in level 10. McMurtry scored a perfect 10.0 for this vault during Gymnastike's coverage of December's Christmas on the Chesapeake meet. Check out that vault:
The University of Florida has secured many of the nation's top recruits this year. McMurtry's commitment comes just a few days after U.S. Junior National Team Member Amelia Hundley of Cincinnati announced Florida as her college of choice.
In addition to Hundley and McMurtry, the Florida roster is soon to be bolstered with elites Grace McLaughlin and Alyssa Baumann of WOGA, Kennedy Baker and Peyton Ernst of Texas Dreams, and Ericha Fassbender of Stars.
