2013 World Championships Balance Beam Finals

Welcome to your home for the 2013 World Championships Balance Beam Final. This page will be updated throughout the week with breaking news and pertinent information specific to women's balance beam. The Final will be held on Sunday, October 6th.

Aliya Mustafina
of Russia won the gold with a score of 14.900 followed by Kyla Ross of the USA in second with a score of 14.833. Simone Biles won the bronze with a score of 14.333.

It was a strange beam final with Mustafina, Ross and Biles all submitting inquiries on their beam scores. Mustafina's  petition was denied and the judges accepted the challenge from Ross and Biles. Simone's adjusted score moved her from fourth to third and Vanessa Ferrari was bumped to fourth.

Shockingly, Larisa Iordache fell again on balance beam as she did in the all-around final. Iordache fell early in the routine on her full-twisting back tuck. Iordache was one of the favorites for gold.

The 2013 World Beam Title Contenders
Larisa Iordache, Romania
Iordache is the reigning European Champion on beam and has competed the highest D score in the world this year at 6.90. Her routine even includes a roundoff layout full twist combination! Iordache is also the only 2012 Olympic beam finalist in the 2013 competition field.

Aliya Mustafina, Russia
Mustafina is beautiful on beam and competes unique combinations like switch half+onodi+double turn. She has competed as high as a 6.50 this year.

Kyla Ross, USA
Compared to the rest of the field, Ross lacks difficulty on beam, but she makes up for it in execution and artistry. She is very calm and consistent in competition, making her a great beam worker.

Simone Biles, USA
Biles is the only gymnast in the competition throwing a full twisting double tuck off beam and has been known to stick it.

Shang Chunsong, China
Never count the Chinese out on beam. They've claimed the previous World and Olympic titles and will be looking to make it three in a row. All three of their beam competitors - Shang, Yao Jinnan, and Zeng Siqi - are great on beam. On any given day, any of these three girls could contend for medals but Shang is the only that qualifed to finals.

UPDATE 10/1: Chinese beam specialist Zeng Siqi fell off beam during subdivision 1 of qualifications and is likely out of contention for the event final, only scoring a 13.90.
