Senior Spotlight- Georgia
This Saturday night the Georgia Gym Dogs will celebrate senior night and honor their three seniors; Kaylan Earls, Cat Hires and Lindsay Cheek.
Kaylan Earls
Prior to Georgia: Kaylan is from Chicago, Illinois where she trained at Arena gymnastics. She was a two time Junior Olympic National Champion in 2008 and 2009. She was also a Junior Olympic National Team member in 2008 and 2009.
Career at Georgia: Kaylan began her career at Georgia in 2011 as a freshman. Before the season began, Kaylan suffered a season ending injury when she ruptured her Achilles tendon.
Kaylan came back in 2012 and was a major contributor to the team on two events, beam and vault. She was named the teams’ MVP on beam. She scored her first 9.9 and set a career high on beam against NC State. She set her career high on vault against Arkansas with a 9.875.
In her junior year, Kaylan was named to the lead off spot on floor exercise and the anchor position on balance beam. Kaylan set a new career high on beam, 9.95, against NC State. In her first year on floor, she set her career high of 9.9 against Stanford. Kaylan earned herself SEC Specialist of the Week after her 9.95 on beam against Alabama.
In her senior year this year, Kaylan continues to shine and be a key factor for the Gym Dogs. Kaylan has secured her spot as the beam anchor where she has posted a 9.9 or higher in four meets. She has continued to impress on floor where she has been able to move out of the lead-off spot. Her season high this year on floor is a 9.9.
Academics: Major- Communication Studies. Kaylan was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 2012.
Cat Hires
Prior to Georgia: Cat is from Tampa, Florida where she trained at LaFleur’s. Cat was the 2009 AA state champion and in 2010 and 2008, she won the regional AA title.
Career at Georgia: Cat began her career at Georgia in 2011 as a freshman. Cat competed on vault in every meet for the Gym Dogs and cracked the lineup on bars four times. She tied her career high on vault at the NCAA Regionals with a 9.85 and set a career high of 9.825 on bars against Auburn.
In her sophomore year, Cat again competed in the vault lineup every meet for the Gym Dogs. She was named the teams’ vault co-MVP. Cat improved her career high on vault as she posted a 9.925 against Kentucky and took home her first event title.
Cat was able to add floor to her repertoire in 2013 for the Gym Dogs. For her third straight season, Cat competed on vault in every meet. She tied her career high twice with a 9.925. Cat cracked the floor lineup six times in the 2013 season where she set a career high of 9.875 against Stanford.
As a senior, Cat has stepped up to the plate and helped her team as she has competed on three events in every meet this year (vault, bars, and floor). Cat set a new career high last week on bars with a 9.925 against Arkansas. Cat has posted a season high on floor four times this year of a 9.85.
Academics: Major- Communication Studies. Cat was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 2012 and 2013. She was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2013.
Lindsay Cheek
Prior to Georgia: Lindsay is from Watkinsville, Georgia where she trained at Georgia Elite Gymnastics. Lindsay was the Georgia State AA Champion in 2008 and 2009. In 2009 Lindsay was the Region 8 vault, beam, floor and AA champion. She was also a four-time level 10 national qualifier.
Career at Georgia: As a freshman, Lindsay joined the team in January just weeks before the start of the 2011 season. Lindsay saw consistent action on three events in her freshman season (vault, beam and floor). She qualified to the individual vault finals at the NCAA championships where she scored a 9.7875 average. She set a career high of 9.95 on vault against Auburn where she performed in the AA for the first time, posting a 39.55. Lindsay set a career high of 9.85 on beam and 9.825 on floor. Lindsay earned first team All-American honors on vault.
Lindsay’s sophomore season was cut short as she missed a majority of the season with back spasms. She was able to make it back for the post season to contribute on vault at regionals and nationals. Lindsay scored a 9.95 for her team in the NCAA prelims, which qualified her for event finals on vault for the second straight year. She averaged a 9.7313 in the event finals. In a shorten season, Lindsay earned first team All-American honors on vault.
Lindsay came back to her junior year in great health where she completed on three events in every meet for the Gym Dogs (vault, bars, and beam). Lindsay tied her career high of 9.95 against Utah and scored a 9.9 or higher 10 times on vault for the Gym Dogs. Lindsay had a season high of 9.875 on bars. In the lead off position, Lindsay provided consistency for her team where she hit 13 of 16 routines. She posted a new career high of 9.925 on beam. For the third straight year, Lindsay qualified for the NCAA individual event finals on vault where she scored a 9.874 average. Lindsay earned first team All-American honors on vault and second team honors on beam.
Lindsay is off to a sizzling start to her senior season setting a new career high on three events. Lindsay has been a great leader for her team and has led by example. She has scored 9.9 or higher in 19 of27 routines this season and has set a new career high on both vault and bars with a 9.975. Lindsay has improved her career high on beam to a 9.95. She has won a total of 15 event titles this season. Lindsay has been named SEC Specialist of the week twice so far this season.
Academics: Major- Psychology. Lindsay was named to Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 2012 and 2013. She was also named to the SEC Academic Honor roll in 2013.
