Michigan Defends: 2014 NCAA Men's Team Finals Recap
#MDynasty: Michigan successfully defends and wins their second consecutive national title and 3rd in 4 years on their home floor at Crisler Arena with a 445.05 This was the first time the NCAA Championships have been hosted by Michigan since 1971. Michigan also had a perfect record of 35-0 in 2014. In 2nd place was University of Oklahoma with a 441.65 and finishing third was Stanford with a 436.3. Michigan got off to a fast start on pommel horse posting a 75.1 thanks to senior Sam Mikulak's 15.6 in the final routine. Ohio State had to put an injury in warm-ups behind them on floor and was able to post a 73.2 despite a fall from Sean Melton. Oklahoma had to count a fall of their own but Danny Berardini posted a 15.1 and the sooners were able to salvage a 73.4 after one.
In the second rotation, Stanford rocked pbars lead by freshman Akash Modi's `15.5 to close the gap on Michigan to a .2 advantage. Michigan was on rings where the judging was a bit tighter tonight then in the qualifier.
Michigan moved to the vault in the 3rd rotation and totaled a 74.2 in part to Sam Mikulak's stuck Kaz 1 1/2 for a 15.3. However Oklahoma, thanks to a rocking floor rotation of 76.1 and a high of 15.55 for Oyama, climbed back into second place behind Michigan. Stanford struggled a bit on high bar and dropped to third.
In the 4th rotation, Michigan continued to pull away from the field with a big 75.95 lead by Sam Mikulak's 16.05. Oklahoma was consistent on horse with scores from 14.4 up to Michael Reid 15.6 to remain in 2nd place. Stanford had a good floor rotation lead by Levy's 15.45 to remain in 3rd with two rotations to go.
Michigan continued to lead after rotation 5 despite Sam Mikulak's 13.35 HB after coming off on his Kolman. Oklahoma was solid on rings lead by Squires 15.7 to remain in 2nd place 2.3 points behind Michigan. Illinois jumped into 3rd place after their 73.1 on floor lead by scores of 15.3 and 15.35 from Eggleston and Maestas respectfully.
The 6th rotation was just the icing on the cake for Michigan as they totaled a 76.05 on floor lead by Sam Mikulak 16.05 successfully defending their national title on their home floor. Oklahoma held onto 2nd place after a 75.0 vault total in the final rotation. Stanford was consistent on rings as Zaremski anchored the cardinals on rings with a 15.05.
