FIVE Champions Crowned in Senior Women's Event Finals

Due to a tie on the floor exercise, FIVE senior champions were crowned in the final day of women’s competition at the 2014 European Championship!

Giulia Steingruber
(SUI), who qualified first to the vault final, proved that she deserved the title as she scored a 14.666 average for her Rudy and Yurchenko full.Anna Pavlova (AZE) took silver with a 14.583 average for her DTY and Yurchenko 1/2 on- layout ½ off, and Larisa Iordache (ROU) came in a close third with a 14.533 for her DTY and tsuk 1.5 twist. Fourth through eighth places went to Alla Sosnitskayaof Russia (14.449), Janine Berger of Germany (14.399), Claudia Fragapane of Great Britain (14.333), Kim Bui of Germany (13.833), and Noemi Makra of Hungary (13.362), respectively.

On bars, Great Britain’s Rebecca Downie improved on her qualifying score by 0.4 points to run away with a 15.50 and the gold medal! Aliya Mustafina (RUS), who had tied Downie in the qualification round, took home silver with a 15.266 for her clean routine (with a stuck landing on the full-twisting double back dismount!), and her teammate Daria Spiridonova just squeezed past Team GB’s Rebecca Tunney to claim bronze with a 14.966. Tunney, who scored a 14.933, was followed by Germany’s Sophie Scheder (14.733), Iordache (14.533), Bui (14.4), and Spain’sRoxana Popa (14.266).

In the third final of the day, Steingruber kicked off the balance beam competition just moments after accepting her vault medal. Unfortunately she fell on her front pike and scored a disappointing 13.2 to finish in eighth place. Meanwhile Iordache, who qualified in first place to the finals with a 15.166, was not able to repeat this stellar score despite her impressive twisting elements. Due to some wobbles, she earned only a 14.8, but this was still good enough for the silver medal behind Maria Kharenkova of Russia (14.933). Fellow Russian Aliya Mustafina also earned a spot on the podium, scoring a 14.733 and taking home the bronze medal. Rebecca Downie, competing in her third and final event of the day, came in fourth with a 14.366, and Italian veteran Vanessa Ferrari ended up fifth with a 14.133. Rounding out the field were Marta Pihan-Kulesza of Poland (13.733), Claire Martin of France (13.366), and Steingruber.

There were two more ties in the floor finals, one of which was the gold medal position!Larisa Iordache, who competed in all four finals today, performed a jam-packed routine highlighted by a double double to earn a 14.8 and a share of the gold medal. Tying with Iordache for the gold was perennial favorite Vanessa Ferrari of Italy, who has won a medal on this event at three previous European Championships. Steingruberrecovered well from her disappointing beam performance and executed a clean floor exercise to take the bronze with a 14.500. The third tie of the day's competition went toDiana Bulimar (ROU) and Pihan-Kulesza (POL), who both scored a 14.4 for fourth place. Sixth place went to Sosnitskaya of Russia (14.266), seventh went to Popa of Spain (14.191), and Fragapane (GBR) rounded out the field with a 14.133.

This marks the end of the women’s competition at the 2014 European Championships. The men’s competition will take place in Sofia next week, May 21st-25th.
