The junior men took to the stage again today in Sofia, competing for the all-around title at the 2014 European Championships. The gold medal went to Nile Wilson (GBR) with a total score of 84.646, while Russia’s Valentin Starikov and fellow British gymnast Brinn Bevan followed in silver and bronze, with scores of 83.540 and 82.932 respectively.

The lead changed hands several times throughout the competition, but in the end, the first and third places went to the gymnasts who qualified in those spots. Wilson, who scored an impressive 85.565 in Wednesday’s qualifying round, proved himself to be worthy of the title despite a few falters early on in the competition. He landed a bit off-balance on his 2.5-twisting Tsuk vault and sat on the parallel bars during a Tippelt, but clean performances on the remaining events helped him to bypass his competitors and finish the competition at the top of the standings. Meanwhile, Starikov competed well throughout the day and nabbed second place from Bevan after Kirill Potapov (RUS) suffered a fall on high bar that knocked him out of contention. Potapov, who qualified to the final in second place, was unable to catch the bar on his Kolman release on high bar, so he had to settle for 15th place with a 79.739 total.

The junior men will be back in action on Sunday, May 25th for apparatus finals along with their senior counterparts. The senior team finals are also still to come, with the competition beginning at 2:30pm EEST (7:30am EST).
