Australia Names Commonwealth Games Team

The Australian Commonwealth Games Association has announced the 10 artistic gymnasts that will represent Australia at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

In Women’s Artistic Gymnastics the athletes are: Georgia-Rose Brown (Vic), Larrissa Miller (Vic), Lauren Mitchell (WA), Mary-Anne Monckton (Vic) and Olivia Vivian (WA).

The Men’s Artistic Gymnastics team comprises: Jayden Bull (Vic), Michael Mercieca (Qld), Mitchell Morgans (Qld), Naoya Tsukahara (Qld) and Luke Wadsworth (Vic).

The team was announced following the conclusion of the senior artistic competition at the 2014 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne, which is the Commonwealth Games trial, on Sunday.

Australian Commonwealth Games Association chief executive officer Perry Crosswhite AM congratulated the 10 athletes selected. “Gymnastics is very important to the overall team performance at Commonwealth Games and I am sure that the athletes selected will do their country proud,” he said. “Australia has always performed well in Artistic Gymnastics and I have no doubt that this group will continue that strong record.”

Perth-based Mitchell, 22, won four gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and is the only member of the Artistic Gymnastics teams to compete at a Commonwealth Games previously.

Gymnastics Australia chief executive officer Mark Rendell said the selection process had been difficult as the focus is on coming up with the right combinations that will give Australia the best chance of a large medal haul. “There is a total of 11 medals that can be won by any one nation in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics and 15 in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics,” he said. “The team selected for the 2014 Commonwealth Games will give Australia the best possible chance of winning the most of those medals available.”

Rendell said there was a great deal of experience in the women’s team with Mitchell, Vivian and Miller all having extensive experience at world championships and Olympic level. Monckton has also competed at the world championships.

The men’s team comprises a group of Australia’s up and coming gymnasts with 36-year-old Tsukahara, a three-time Olympian and Olympic gold medallist, providing solid experience.
