Downie Named May Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Month

Becky Downie
of Great Britain has been named the Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Month for May. This award, presented by British news agency Sky Sports News, follows her stellar performance at the 2014 European Championships, where she won the gold medal on uneven bars and silver in the senior team finals. Downie was selected from a group of six impressive finalists in order to win the award, including tennis great Serena Williams, Marianne Vos, Lucy Garner, Eni Aluko, and Natasha Dowie. She won the poll with a commanding 53% of the votes.

According to British Gymnastics, Downie was delighted to win the award, saying “It’s quite a big thing for gymnastics to be noticed.” She and the rest of team GB had an extremely successful showing at European Championships, taking home a total of 21 men’s and women’s medals. Downie took a short but well-deserved break but is back in the gym now in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in July, where she will represent England.
