Downie and Regini-Moran To Represent GB at Youth Olympics

British junior national team members Ellie Downie and Giarnni Regini-Moran will represent British Gymnastics at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China on August 16th-28th. According to the BBC release, they will be part of a 33-member team which also includes two trampoline gymnasts.

Downie and Regini-Moran have both had a strong 2014 season and will look to build on these successes as they compete in Nanjing. Downie made history in May when she became the first British female artistic gymnast to win an all-around medal at the European Championships. She took the bronze in the all-around as well as team silver and gold on vault. Regini-Moran also competed at the 2014 European Championships, where he contributed to the team gold and earned two individual medals—a gold on floor and a silver on vault. In March, he won four titles at the 2014 Under-16 British Junior Championships, including the all-around, floor, vault, and parallel bars. He also took home a bronze medal on high bar.

The Youth Olympic Games are held in conjunction with the IOC and take the same format as the quadrennial Summer Olympic Games, with athletes participating in the 28 sports to be featured at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The gymnasts will compete against a field of 42 total athletes in individual all-around and event competitions. Qualification for the men will take place on Sunday, August 17th, with all-around finals on August 19th and event finals on August 23rd and 24th. The women will compete in qualifications on Monday, August 18th, with all-around finals on August 20th and event finals on the same days as their male counterparts.
