English Men and Women Lead Commonwealth Games Qualifications
The first day of qualifications is complete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and the list of event finalists is set on five events. Intermediate team and individual all-around standings have also been determined based on today’s competition results. So far, England leads both the men’s and women’s team scoring, with the Australian women currently in second and the Welsh women edging out Canada on the first day of competition for the third place spot so far.
On the women’s side:
The English team started off strong with a mid-way team score of 85.390. Rebecca Downie led the team with her high score of 15.683 on uneven bars, while Ruby Harrold performed a strong vault to earn a 14.733 (although she performed only one vault and will not be considered for event finals). After earning a 13.400 on uneven bars, she now has the second-highest all-around qualifying score at the moment. Claudia Fragapane also performed well with a 14.453 average on vault and a 13.333 on bars. She currently sits in third place for the all-around qualifications.
Currently in second place as a team are the defending Commonwealth Games champions, team Australia, with a score of 83.882. Georgia-Rose Brown had a strong showing on both vault and bars, scoring a 13.849 average on vault and a 14.083 on bars to earn the top mid-way all-around score. Mary-Anne Monckton added a strong 14.000 for her single vault, while Larrissa Miller earned an impressive 14.433 on uneven bars. Monckton currently holds the sixth place standing in the all-around competition.
Wales is sitting in the third-place team standing at the halfway point of the competition, with a total team score of 81.398 so far. Lizzie Beddoe is in fifth place, and Raer Theaker is in eighth, for the all-around qualifications.
In fourth place is team Canada with a 79.732. Ellie Black led the team scoring on both events with a 14.149 vault average and a 13.333 on bars to earn the fourth all-around position so far. Maegan Chant currently sits in ninth place all-around.
Meanwhile, the small but mighty 3-man team from South Africa took the fifth place team finish on day one, with Kirsten Beckett standing in seventh in the all-around scoring.
Team England currently stands in first place as a team with a score of 133.806, with three gymnasts vying for all-around slots. Sam Oldham is currently ranked sixth, while Max Whitlock is in first and Nile Wilson sits in third. Whitlock performed well on all events today, posting the highest score among his team on both floor and pommel horse, with a 15.6 and a 15.733 respectively. Oldham led the team with his 14.533 on rings but scored a disappointing 12.1 on pommel horse to earn a total of 41.958 for the first half of his all-around bid. Louis Smith, 2012 Olympic silver medalist on pommel horse, finished just behind Whitlock with a 15.700 and the second-highest ranking going into the event finals.
Team Scotland, the home team in this competition, is currently ranked second and has a total team score of 127.240. They also have three gymnasts vying for spots in the all-around final: Daniel Keatings (in second place with a mid-way score of 43.399), Daniel Purvis (sitting in fifth with a 42.2) and Frank Baines (currently eighth with a 41.641). Keatings posted the top scores among his team on floor and pommel horse, scoring a 14.966 and 14.533 respectively, while Purvis had the best finish on rings with a 14.70.
In third place as a team is Canada, whose team total is a 125.380. The team’s only all-around competitor is Anderson Loran, who currently stands in seventh in the all-around rankings with a mid-way total of 41.649. Meanwhile, Wales is in fourth place as a team with a total of 122.339. The team’s top performances of the day came from Clinton Purnell, who scored a combined 42.266 and is in fourth place for the all-around competition heading into the second day of qualifications.
Australia stands in fifth place as a team, with a team total of 121.504 at the midway point. Three gymnasts on the Aussie team are competing in the all-around quest, with Naoya Tsukahara scoring 41.440 for ninth, Luke Wadsworth posting 39.932 and taking tenth, and Sean O’Hara scoring 39.298 for 16th at the midway point.
