Commonwealth Games’ gold and bronze medalist Louis Smith has announced that he plans to continue training in gymnastics, at least for the time being. The three-time Olympic medalist initially retired from the sport after the 2012 London Games, but he announced his comeback for the Commonwealth Games in January 2014. He said at the time:
“As far as I am concerned, should I qualify, this will be my last hurrah. The 2012 Olympics were everything to me and I believe that without the successes that I had there, my life could have taken a very different path over the last year and a half. So I can go to the Commonwealth Games knowing that whatever happens, I will have achieved everything I ever dreamt of in gymnastics.”
However, after the huge success that he and his team experienced at the Commonwealth Games last week, Smith seems to have reconsidered his retirement. No word has been given regarding Rio 2016 or the 2015 World Championships, which will be held in Glasgow, but one can easily imagine that the thrill of competing in front of a British home crowd has played a part in his continued efforts. No doubt, the opportunity to compete in a World Championship with strong support from fans and spectators would be an exciting opportunity for the 25-year old veteran. However, he will have to balance his time in the gym with his upcoming responsibilities as a judge on the new BBC television show Tumble, where he will be cohosting with gymnastics legend Nadia Comaneci.
Whether his remaining time in the gym is short or long, British gymnastics fans have reason to be excited that Louis Smith is not hanging up his leotard just yet!
