Top International Gymnasts at Pan American Championships
The Pan American Championships will be held from August 19 - September 1 at the Hershey Centre Main Bowl in Mississauga, Canada and will feature competitors come from all nations of the Americas such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Puerto Rico, USA, Mexico, and Venezuela. Here is a look at some of the top international gymnasts attending these Games.
Daniele Hypólito - Brazil
Daniele Hypólito - Brazil
Hypólito is a four-time Olympian and 12-time senior all-around national champion. She’s attended seven World Championships and won silver on floor in 2001, the first medal of any kind for her country. In 2002, she was the South American Games all-around champion and won all-around bronze the following year at Pan Ams. She’s an exceptionally experienced athlete and good all-arounder with her strongest events being beam and floor.
Her younger brother, Diego Hypólito, is also a world-class elite gymnast and, like his sister, he was also the first male gymnast to ever win a medal at a World Championships, taking floor gold in 2005. Both siblings will compete in Toronto.

Elsa Garcia - Mexico
Garcia is a 2012 Olympian and has represented Mexico at five World Championships. In 2009, she was awarded the Female Longines Prize for Elegance at Worlds. She’s had wide-ranging success in World Cup competitions and at Pan Ams. In 2010, she placed fourth in the all-around and the following year her fifth-place finish in all-around helped her team place third. She also placed second on vault and third on bars in event finals at those 2011 Worlds. Last year, Garcia competed at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, and placed seventh in the all-around and tied for silver on floor with Olympian Ellie Black of Canada.
It is unknown to how many events she will be competing at the Pan Ams this year, but she’s one of Mexico’s top gymnasts and will surely be looking to make the medal podium.
Meagan Chant - Canada
Chant attended the 2013 World Championships and recently competed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where the team placed fourth. At the Pacific Rim Championships in April, she helped Canada win a team silver medal, placed third on vault, and eighth in the all-around. At the Canadian Nationals in May, she won vault and placed second on floor, fourth on beam, and ninth in the all-around.
Her strongest events are vault and floor. On floor she opens with a nice double layout, full-in pike second pass, double tuck third pass, and double pike last pass. This is her second year competing as a senior and she’s one of Canada’s emerging elite gymnasts.

Jessica Lopez - Venezuela
Lopez competed in the NCAA when she attended the University of Denver. She qualified as an individual at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and again in London in 2012, when she finished 13th in the all-around. At the 2010 World Championships, she placed 10th in the all-around - the best finish ever by a Venezuelan gymnast. At the 2013 Pan Ams, she won silver on bars and beam. In February, she competed in the Nadia Comaneci International Invitational in Oklahoma where she finished second in the all-around. In May, she competed at the Anadia World Cup in Portugal and won gold on bars and beam. Lopez is another extremely experienced competitor and still producing incredible results at the age of 28.
