Routines Not to Miss From Senior Pan Ams

Locklear (USA) Bars
Ashton Locklear continued to impress and prove consistency at the Senior Pan American Championships when she delivered yet another beautiful winning bar routine that scored a 14.975. This international season, she has positioned herself as a high contender for selection to Team USA’s World team in a few weeks. Here is her winning routine from event finals.

Ferrera (CUB) Floor
Yesenia Ferrera is a huge tumbler with impressive power and strength. She competed a huge full-in layout first pass with great height and solid body position. Although her double layout second pass bounced out of bounds, she shows no trouble performing the skill. Lack in holding her hips open caused the slight piked hip angle, which generated the force and bounce backwards. She has a remarkable amount of strength and noticeable quick twitch that gives her the power to tumble so high and powerfully. But this tumbling requires more specific control, especially when faced with a bouncier floor than the gymnast may be use to. She continued with stunning high leaps, a good 2 1/2 punch front layout from literally two steps, and open double tuck last pass. Typically, powerful, strong gymnasts lack flexibility. Ferrera is unique in that she possesses both, and performs huge tumbling and beautiful leaps. The biggest deduction are on her landings. Once these are improved, she has the potential to score extremely well.

Kocian (USA) Beam
Although Madison Kocian missed a few connections and had a few balance checks, she delivered a very nice routine. She scored a 13.825, which seemed underscored. Regardless of her result, Kocian has proven consistency as she hit her routine on both days of competition (team and event finals). This will be important for team selections leading up to the World Championships next month. Check out here routine here.

Lopez (VEN) Bars
Olympian Jessica Lopez delivered a skill-packed routine with some great connections, including a nice piked tcatchev into pak, shaposh into uprise clear invert full turn, tcatchev straight into ginger, invert into jager, and invert into double front dismount. It was an outstanding routine and her raw emotion after, when she celebrated with a fist pump and even tears after she walked off the podium, was moving. Her score of a 14.25 was the second-highest score from the team competition.

Gonzalez (CHI) Floor
Chilean Olympian, Tomas Gonzalez, is known for his specialty on the floor exercise. At Senior Pan Ams, he performed a winning floor routine beating rival Diego Hyoplito from Brazil by just 0.075. The fan favorite has done wonders for his country competing at World Cup events, World Championships, and Olympic Games. In 2011, he was ranked No.1 in the World in the Vault and Floor exercise. Expect to see him continue his success at the World Championships this October and toward the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Watch his routine here

Sasaki Junior (BRA) Vault
Segio Sasaki Junior nailed a huge dragulescu (handspring double front tuck half turn) first vault. Although, he unfortunately stumbled backwards on his second vault of a tusk double pike, he showed tremendous power competing this vault. The lacked rotation caused him to land with his chest low and combined with the power and speed, resulted in his big save by stumbling backwards. Despite this error and thanks to his huge first vault, he managed to win the title. Watch them here
