Highs and Lows of 2014 World Championships
After a great 2014 World Championships behind us, let's take a look at the highs and lows of the Championships.
Highs
Highs
1. Simone Biles sets a new gold medal record for World Championships
Biles won 4 gold’s and 1 silver at this year’s World Championships. Biles has a total of six world gold medals, the most by any US gymnast. Biles is now tied with Shannon Miller and Nastia Liukin for nine career World Championships medals. Only Alicia Sacramone has more with 10 total. Biles won gold in the team competition, all-around finals, floor and beam. Biles also won silver on the vault.
2. Epke Zonderland’s impressive, high flying high routine
Zonderland scored a 16.225 to bring home the gold medal for Netherlands. He is known as the “Flying Dutchman” due to his incredible talent on this event. He features high flying release moves in combination along with a sky high dismount. His difficulty score of 7.7 is the highest of any gymnast at this year’s World Championships. This gold medal makes this Zonderland’s third straight world high bar title.
3. King Kohei Uchimura wins his fifth straight all-around title
Japan’s Kohei Uchimura was crowned the 2014 World All-Around Champion, claiming his fifth back to back World All-Around title. Uchimara was the overwhelming favorite in this competition and he did not disappoint. He held the lead throughout the entire competition which put pressure on the rest of the field.
4. The USA women dominate to clench a team gold
The American women finished their team final with a massive total score of 179.280, winning their first ever, back-to-back World Championship team title. The US came in nearly seven points above the runner up, China, and close to eight points above bronze medal winner, Russia.
Lows
1. Aliya Mustafina missing the podium during all-around finals
Mustafina had a shocking fall on her first pass where she sat down her Arabian double tuck. She continued well and stuck her 2 1/2 to front full but it wasn’t enough to recover and she finished with a 13.433 for a 57.915 all-around.
2. Mykayla Skinner narrowly missing the bronze medal on floor exercise
There has been much debate about Skinner’s performance on floor as if she was deserving of the bronze medal. Skinner hit a huge routine that included four strong passes - a double double laid out, double double tuck, full-in tuck, and 1.5 walk out into 2.5 twist. She was narrowly edged out by Aliya Mustafina whose routine pushed her just 0.033 off the podium.
3. The US women missing the podium on bars during event finals
Ashton Locklear was the only contender for the US women as she placed fourth with a score of 15.266. Locklear missed the bronze by only .017 on a point. Locklear was competing in her first World Championships. She opened with her five connected releases moving back and forth between the bars with beautiful form. She continued with a big straddle Jaeger and finished with a full in, taking a small step back.

4. Ri Se Gwang injuries his ankles on vault. After nailing an amazing Dragalescu, Gwang went for his second vault during event finals, performing a risky Tsuk full-in. As he landed, the North Korean gymnast took a large step sideways, where he seemed to injure his ankles, and possibly a knee. He hopped to the edge of the podium, where we was quickly lifted up and carried off by his coaches toward his country's designated area.
