Biles Named WSF Woman of the Year
Biles Named WSF Woman of the Year
After collecting a substantial batch of medals in Nanning, repeat world champion Simone Biles will have to keep expanding her trophy rack back home in Texas! Last night, she was crowned the Woman of the Year at the 35th annual Women’s Sports Foundation Gala in New York.
Biles won the award in honor of her achievements at the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp, but it was only fitting that she receive the prize just a few days after returning to the USA from her medal-hauling trip to China. The award was presented by Nastia Liukin, who won the title of Woman of the Year herself in 2008! Two other gymnasts— Courtney Kupets (2009) and Gabby Douglas (2012)— have won the award in the past, with Biles bringing the total to four.

She faced stiff competition from other phenomenal athletes including snowboarder Jamie Anderson, tennis star Serena Williams, and skier Tina Maze. According to a TeamUSA.org article, Biles said that winning the award “would mean the world” and that she saw herself as a “newbie” in comparison to the other athletes. Despite feeling like a “newbie,” she was still able to win the vote and walk away with the beautiful engraved glass award.
Other winners for the night included Meryl Davis (Woman of the Year in the Team category), Noelle Pikus-Pace (Wilma Rudolph Courage Award), and marathon runner Tegla Loroupe (Billie Jean King Contribution Award).
While Simone is in New York, she is making the most of her trip by stopping by the Today Show this morning (Thursday, October 16th) for an interview. What will be next for the back-to-back world champion? Hopefully a few days of well-earned relaxation and recovery!
