Medaling in Medellin: Results

The final challenge of the 2013-14 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series concluded on Sunday, November 9 in Medellin, Colombia. As the first World Cup event held in the country and only the third in Latin America, it proved successful for Colombian athletes who topped the medal count at 7 (two gold, three silver, and two bronze).

Women’s Competition

There were no real surprises on the women’s side of competition. Our top picks of athletes to look for all medaled on their signature events. Yamilet Pena (DOM) rebounded past the competition taking gold on vault and Ana Filipa Martins (POR) swung her way to gold on bars and bounded for bronze on floor. Bibiana Velez (COL) went home with a bronze medal on bars.

The men’s competition was fierce this weekend, with mere hundredths of a point determining who would stand on the podium. The gymnasts from Brazil proved indomitable, winning the most gold medals for any of the countries represented at three. Two of those gold medals belong to Diego Hypolito (BRA) for powerful performances on both vault and floor. The Colombian home team represented well with Jhonny Munoz securing a gold medal on pommel horse and Jossimar Calvo leaving the competition in the chalk dust by scoring a 16.000 on parallel bars. Not only was that the highest score for both the men’s and women’s competition, it was a huge 1.200-point differential ahead of second-place finisher Ryoma Kawamoto (JPN).
