Best Upset of 2014 - #3 Aliya Musta-hadafever

As the year draws to a close, we are taking a look back at the best of 2014. The final few days of this year will be filled with the best routines, moments, and more from this year for you to enjoy. Today we’ll be looking at the Best Upsets of 2014 and kicking things off will be Aliya Mustafina missing the podium in the all-around at the 2014 World Championships.

As the 9th most decorated female artistic gymnast of all time at the World Championships, and as defending bronze medalist in the all-around at World’s, we were all expecting Mustafina to give Simone Biles a run for her money for the title. But, even a gymnastics great is allowed to have a bad day. After coming in second with a 58.874 behind Simone Biles (59.599) in the all-around qualification, Mustafina had a strong start during finals competition with a 15.100 on vault and a 15.041 on bars. But, multiple large wobbles on beam caused (14.341) and a fall on floor (13.433) cost Mustafina not only the title, but also a place on the podium. She finished just out of medal contention at fourth with a total of 57.915.

Mustafina would later explain that she was a battling an illness and that was the cause of her poor performance at World’s.

It’s okay, Aliya. You’re still a G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) in our book!

Be sure to check back later to find out our picks for best upsets in 2014!
