Meet The Team: Stanford
The No. 10 Stanford Cardinal enters the 2015 season with a wealth of experience and extremely impressive talent. Stanford will be returning more than 85% of the team that finished second at the Pac-12 Championships and adds phenomenal talent with the addition of freshman Elizabeth Price.
SENIORS
Pauline Hanset

Kristina Vaculik
Rebecca Wing
Stanford’s senior class will be looking to lead the Cardinal back to the Super Six as they did as freshman back in 2012. Kristina Vaculik, one of Stanford’s two team captains, is coming off a notable 2014 season in which she hit 90 percent of her routines, led the Pac-12 with three Gymnast of The Week titles as well as earning All-American honors on bars, floor and in the all-around.
One of the nation’s best on the uneven bars, Samantha Shapiro is expected to retain her spot as an anchor for the Cardinal as well as continue to be a solid contributor on floor.
Despite missing the last two postseasons due to an injury, Pauline Hanset has stepped up the difficulty in her floor routine and will be the lead-off for the Cardinal’s floor lineup. Hanset has also been a mainstay int Stanford’s vault and beam lineups.
Rebecca Wing will has been an essential part of Stanford’s bar and beam lineups and will continue to do so in the lead-off spot for the Cardinal.
JUNIORS
Melissa Chuang
Jenna Frowein
Ivana Hong (RsJR)
Taylor Rice
After missing the 2014 season with an injury, the Cardinal is anxiously looking forward to the return of redshirt junior, Ivana Hong. The two-time All-American has been phenomenal for Stanford in the all-around in past seasons, but will primarily be the core of the line-ups on bars and beam. Head Coach Krysten Smyth has said, “Having Ivana back is huge. She’s perfection on bars and beam. She’s really stepped up as a strong leader and one of our team captains.”
A 2013 All-American on floor, Taylor Rice heads into 2015 with a new, self-choreographed routine on floor which Smyth has described as “fun and signature Taylor.” Rice has become a consistent all-arounder and contributor to all four event lineups.
The Cardinal’s “Most Improved Gymnast in 2014”, Jenna Frowein, made her collegiate debut on floor last season as a sophomore. After honing her skills and posting a career high of a 9.850 in 2014, Frowein will be a solid contributor for the Cardinal in 2015.
Unfortunately, Melissa Chuang will not compete during the 2015 season due to an injury. Chuang is a powerful gymnast and the depth of the Cardinal’s floor and vault lineups will be tested without her presence.

With a season of collegiate gymnastics fully under their belts, Stanford returns an impressive and extremely competitive sophomore class.
The 2014 PAC-12 Freshman of the Year, Nicolette McNair, hit 95 percent of her routines last season, excelling on vault, beam and bars. She will continue to be heavily relied on as a counting score on those events.
Danielle McNair, Nicolette’s twin sister, also played a significant role in Stanford’s successful 2014 regular season campaign by consistently contributing on both vault and bars.
Rachel Daum is coming off a fantastic freshman campaign, where she was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week, the first Stanford gymnast to ever receive the honor. She held a regular spot in the vault, beam and floor lineups posting a score of 9.800 or higher in 18 of 19 performances.
This Cardinal’s are looking forward to the return of Sophia Lee in 2015. After her freshman season was cut short by an injury, Stanford’s bar and vault lineups will gratefully appreciate her return to the competition floor.
Haley Spector made several appearances in the floor lineup during her freshman season and will again be expected to add depth not only on the floor but also on vault and beam.
FRESHMAN
Elizabeth Price
Elizabeth Price
When you’ve got talent like Elizabeth Price, you don’t need a class of more than one. The lone freshman for the Cardinal, may be a newcomer to the collegiate competition floor, but she brings talent and international experience galore. The four-year U.S. National Team veteran has long and impressive resume and will definitely become a prized possession for the Stanford Women’s Gymnastics program. Although she’s currently recovering from a foot injury, Price will ease into the all-around as the season progresses, surely racking up an abundance of honors and titles along the way.
