Gymnasts To Watch For At Pikes Peak
The Pikes Peak Cup is one of the top level 10 competitions in the country and this year is no exception. The level 10s will be fighting for a spot at the 2015 Nastia Liukin Cup and there are many viable contenders. Gymnastike will be streaming the premier level 10 session live on Friday night at 6:20pm MT, as well as the event finals session on Saturday night at 7pm MT. Below are just some of the gymnasts you will want to keep an eye out for.
Katelyn Ohashi - WOGA
Former international elite gymnast Katelyn Ohashi has returned to competitive gymnastics after nearly two years. She is competing level 10 again but has included many of her elite level skills in her routines. She made her return just a couple weeks ago at the Texas Prime Meet where she competed vault, beam, and floor and scored a 9.875, 9.6, and 8.85 respectively. In an interview with Gymnastike she told us she was training bars but it probably wouldn’t be ready by Pikes Peak. Watch Ohashi's beam routine from Texas Prime here.
Bailey Ferrer - Orlando Metro
International elite gymnast Bailey Ferrer will be competing in the premier level 10 session. She placed first all-around at both the Tampa Bay Turners Invite and Sand Dollar Invite this year, scoring over a 38 in both meets. In 2014, she competed at the Secret Classic and P&G Championships for the first time. She qualified for the Nastia Cup this year which will be her third time competing in the meet.
Chae Campbell - Metroplex
First year level 10 Chae Campbell competed her very first meet as a ten last weekend at the Metroplex Challenge where she scored a 38.575 all-around including a 9.925 on her Yurchenko full vault. Campbell was the top scoring junior from the level 10 competition and therefore qualified for the Nastia Liukin Cup in March. Watch Campbell's floor routine here (Gold).
Emily Muhlenhaupt - Colorado Aerials
Emily Muhlenhaupt is a junior international elite who qualified for the 2013 and 2014 Secret Classic. She was unable to finish the 2014 season due to injury but is planning to compete once again at this weekend’s Pikes Peak. Muhlenhaupt has strong basics and clean form and it will be exciting to see her compete this year.
Nicole Lehrmann - Capital
Future Oklahoma Sooner Nicole Lehrmann is a former elite gymnast and is currently one of the top level 10s in the country. At the Texas Prime Meet this year she won her age group with a 38.05. She is solid on every event and is a cool and calm competitor under pressure. She is a relatively tall gymnast but performs her skills with ease and grace. Watch Lehrmann's bar set from Texas Prime Legendz Classic here.
Alexa Al-Hameed - Triad
Second year level 10 gymnast Alexa Al-Hameed qualified to the 2015 Nastia Cup last weekend at the Circle of Stars Invite. She also qualified last year as a first year level 10 and she finished 7th all-around. She then went on to compete at JO Nationals where she placed 10th all-around. Bars is one of her most exciting events and she performs a huge Tkatchev and finishes with an Arabian double front dismount.
Bridget Dean - Orlando Metro
Bridget Dean is a former elite gymnast who has been able to consistently score 38s as a level 10. Her first year as a level 10 was in 2009 and in 2011 she competed as a junior international elite. She was unable to compete for the next couple years due to injury but has returned at full force. She graduates in 2017 and has committed to Kentucky.
Lauren Farley - WOGA
Former international elite and future Michigan gymnast, Lauren Farley has returned to level 10 and is an exciting gymnast to watch. She competed at the Secret Classic and P&G Championships in 2013 but did not see competition in most of 2014. She began 2015 at the Texas Prime Meet where she placed second on beam, third on floor, but had some major mistakes on bars, finishing in 6th all-around. She has big skills and great form and with consistency will be hard to beat. Watch Farley's floor from Texas Prime Legendz Classic here.
Madison Osman - Orlando Metro
Madison Osman is a stellar, third-year level 10 gymnast from Orlando Metro. Last year, she placed seventh all-around at JO Nationals. Her 2015 season is off to a great start and at the Tampa Bay Turners Invitational, she earned a 37.825 to place first and qualify for the Nastia Cup.
Kaitlin DeGuzman - Metroplex
Second year level 10 Kaitlin DeGuzman is an exciting gymnast to watch. In 2014, she placed third all-around at JO Nationals and went on to qualify for junior international elite. She also competed at the 2014 Nastia Cup and placed fourth on floor. Last weekend at the Metroplex Challenge, she finished second in her age group with a 37.875 and first on beam with a 9.75.
