Top 10 Vaults To Watch For At NCAA Championships
Top 10 Vaults To Watch For At NCAA Championships
NCAA Championships will be taking place April 17-19 in Forth Worth, Texas. The 12 teams competing all succeeded as the top two in their respective regional competitions, in addition to the top all-arounders. Those who get through the preliminary rounds will proceed to the Super Six Finals.
The best routines of college gymnastics will be showcased in the battle for the NCAA Gymnastics Champion, and we’ve put together what we consider to be the Top 10 vaults to watch for at the competition in a few weeks. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive – with so many great gymnasts in one place, it’s hard to choose just 10. Think we missed someone? Let us know in the comments section below!
1. Bridget Sloan (Florida)
After battling through an injury earlier in the season, Bridget Sloan dazzled at the Morgantown Regional last weekend and competed in all four events. One of the most memorable events was vault, where she scored the highest score out of anyone at Regionals – a 9.975 on her full twisting Yurchenko.
2. Alex McMurtry (Florida)
Another strong Gator vaulter is Alex McMurtry, currently ranked #1 in the country on the event. Alex scored a 9.95 at Regionals to help the Gators to victory. She is extremely consistent on vault, averaging a 9.939 in the regular season with a season high of a 10.0. McMurtry performs a full twisting Yurchenko, and what sets her apart is the height she gets off the table and the incredible form she shows in the air.
3. Kytra Hunter (Florida)
Theremust be something in the water in Florida. Kytra Hunter added to the team’s strong vault performance at Regionals with another 9.95 on her Yurchenko 1 ½ - a more difficult vault given the blind landing. Kytra is currently ranked 2nd in the country on vault, averaging a 9.87 in the regular season. Her season high was a 9.975. We’re hoping to see a 10.0 before her senior year is over!
4. Georgia Dabritz (Utah)
In her final season for the Utes, Georgia Dabritz has been a strong all-around competitor, and vault is one of her best events. Georgia is another gymnast who performs a Yurchenko 1 ½ , and she averaged a 9.866 in the regular season and boasts a 10.0 as her season high. She is currently ranked No. 3 in the country, and she did not disappoint at Regionals, where she scored a 9.95.
5. Jessie DeZiel (Nebraska)
Jessie DeZiel is, without a doubt, the strongest vaulter for Nebraska. Ranking No. 10 in the country, she averaged 9.895 this season, with a season high just shy of a 10.0 – a 9.975. Jessie scored a 9.95 on her full twisting Yurchenko vault at Regionals. She shows a lot of power in her vaults and great height off the table. We're looking forward to seeing how she performs at Championships.
6. Haley Scaman (Oklahoma)
Haley Scaman already has a perfect 10 under her belt from this season, and her seasonal average is a very high 9.931. She is currently ranked 6th in the country on the event and continued her success at Regionals last weekend with a strong 9.925. Haley vaults a full twisting Yurchenko with gorgeous form – legs locked together with solid landings every time.
7. Rheagan Courville (LSU)
Rheagan Courville is one of the strongest seniors in the country right now in NCAA Gymnastics. She has also scored a perfect 10 on vault this season, and she’s currently ranked 3rd in the country, tie with Georgia Dabritz. Her regular season average is a 9.922. At Regionals, she scored a 9.925 on her full twisting Yurchenko. Rheagan’s vaults are super powerful, and she always managed to travel far from the table, while also keeping her form intact.
8. Elizabeth Price (Stanford)
Elizabeth Price was one of the strongest vaulters in the elite world before she started at Stanford this year, so it’s no wonder her vaults are something worth seeing. In her freshmen season, she’s already scored a perfect 10, she’s ranked 6th in the country, and her seasonal average is a 9.938. Given that she previously competed an Amanar in her elite days, it’s not surprising that her full twisting Yurchenko is sky high. She scored a 9.925 at Regionals, and we can’t wait to see how she does in a few weeks.
9. Lindsay Mable (Minnesota)
Lindsay Mable is advancing to Semifinals as an individual all-around competitor, and vault is one of her best events. She’s currently ranked 10th in the country (tied with a number of others, including Jessie Deziel) and has a season high of 9.95, averaging 9.892. Her full twisting Yurchenko has lots of height off the table and great form in the air. Her scores have been very high the past few weeks, including at Regionals where she scored a 9.925.
10. Toni-Ann Williams (California)
Toni-Ann Williams is tied with Rheagan Courville and Georgia Dabritz for the No. 3 ranking on vault in the country. Williams’ full twisting Yurchenko is super powerful – she practically travels off of the mat because she gets so much height and distance from the table. She has already scored a perfect 10.0 this season, and she has a regular season average of 9.915. Her performance at Regionals allowed her to advance to the individual all-around competition, and we’re excited to see how she does.
