Georgia Dabritz of Utah, Florida’s Kytra Hunter, Lindsay Mable from Minnesota and UCLA’s Samantha Peszek are the four nominees for the Honda Sports Award for gymnastics as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) today.

 

The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”.  The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2015 Honda Cup. The nominees were chosen by a panel of experts and coaches representing the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGCW).

 

The Honda Sports award winner for gymnastics will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

 

Honda Sports award winners will be presented with the honor during on-campus presentations throughout the year and all Honda Sports award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2015 Honda Cup award which will be presented on June 29, in a live televised broadcast from L.A.

 

Dabritz, a senior from Newburyport, Mass., was named the 2015 AAI Award winner as the top senior gymnast in the nation entering the NCAA Championship. At the 2015 NCAA Championship meet, she captured the uneven bar individual title helping her team to a second-place finish. She was the first gymnast in NCAA history to score a 10 on bars in both the semifinal and Super Six team competitions. It was also the first NCAA individual champion at Utah since 2007. She finished her career as a 16-time All-American and was named the 2015 Pac-12 Gymnast and Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

 

Hunter led the Gators to their third straight national championship title after capturing the NCAA individual title on floor exercise and tying for the 2015 NCAA All-Around title. She is now the all-time career leader at Florida in NCAA individual event titles with four overall. The 2015 SEC Gymnast of the Year shared the SEC vault and floor titles this season to be just one of five gymnasts in SEC Championship history to claim at least one league event title each season of her career. The senior from Frederick, Md., is a 21-time All-American and was named the Class of 2012 Honda Award winner for gymnastics as a freshman.

 

Mable earned a Minnesota school record and career-high 31 individual event wins in 2015, including 11 All-Around crowns. She was named the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and was the top-ranked All-Around gymnast in the country for two consecutive weeks in 2015. The junior hailing from Aurora, Colo., defended her Big 10 title on the vault this year and shared the 2015 Big 10 title on floor exercise while finishing as the Big 10 All-Around runner-up. She has 10 career All-American accolades, including four from this season alone and was named the Big 10 Gymnast of the Week six times this season.

 

Peszek is a two-time NCAA balance beam champion after capturing the title again this season and was the 2015 All-Around co-champion. She has three career NCAA titles and 17 All-America honors. A native of Indianapolis, Ind., she recorded a team-best 18 individual titles in 2015. She won the floor exercise at the Pac-12 Championship and is a two-time Pac-12 individual champion in balance beam. The senior is a four-time All-Pac-12 first-team honoree and a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic team member while also earning a Bruin Leadership award and being recognized three times on the UCLA All-Academic team.

 

Three student-athletes from the sport of gymnastics have gone on to win the prestigious Honda Cup, including last year’s winner for the Class of 2014, Kim Jacob (University of Alabama). She was joined previously by Courtney Kupets (University of Georgia) in 2009 and Missy Marlowe (University of Utah) in 1992.

 

THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation’s top NCAA women athletes for 39 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.   Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.0 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women’s athletics programs at the institutions.
