Lindsay Williams' Road To Success
Michigan gymnast, Lindsay Williams, is coming off of her best season yet as a junior. Williams stepped up this past season to help her team on multiple events. Williams went 32-34 routines while setting new career highs on all three events (bars, beam and floor).

You came into Michigan as a walk on gymnast, what went into your decision?
I wanted to go to a great academic school. I also wanted to go to a school with great resources and Michigan being a Big Ten school offered that. I wanted the best! I grew up only 20 minutes for Ann Arbor so going to Michigan was so surreal to me and a dream come true.

This past season was your best season yet, competing in multiple events, what do you account for that success?
I have spent most of my summers in Ann Arbor training and I think that the strength and conditioning from the past two years have really carried over to my gymnastics. I also worked really hard on working on my combinations and small details. I became much more consistent and confident and that was because I am doing a lot more drills, numbers and just time and effort.

What is the biggest change in your gymnastics since you have been at Michigan?
The biggest change is that I retired from doing vault. It was mainly due to my knee and to allow me to focus on the other events. I am doing a lot more drills on floor. I am doing more tramp work than ever, only tumbling on floor 2-3 times per week. Doing more tramp work allows me to feel better and become more confident when I do work on the hard floor. On bars and beam I have just placed a different emphasis on my training and learning new drills and techniques.

What was it like to have such success this year and provide on multiple events for your team?
It felt great! It was a very relaxed atmosphere this year on our team. We had a business trip mindset and everyone went out there to do our job. It felt great that I was able to do my job for the team. Everyone was so calm and supportive of each other. I was lead off on bars and floor so it felt really great to hit and get the team rolling on those events.

What goals do you have personally going into your senior year?
I just want to do the same thing as last year and have fun! I also want to stay healthy to be able to help the team the best I can. I am working possible upgrades to my tumbling on floor, working on sticking more dismounts on both bars and beam. I also have goals this summer to prepare myself to be able to compete week in and week out next year. That was something that I wasn’t used to last season.

Who has been the biggest supporter to you at Michigan to help you succeed?
All my coaches have been so supportive. Bev has been amazing and so helpful to me, especially on beam. She has helped me to see and believe I can be a good athlete, and she has pushed me to that. She has continued to push me to believe I could get to where I am today. Scott is always helpful by staying calm and fun. Dave always wants us to have fun and relax. Dave has always believed in me on floor and has been very supportive. Our strength and conditioning coach, Lu, has been extremely helpful to me. He has worked hard to specialize in things I could do that others might not be doing. This has allowed me to stay stronger and limit the pain to my knee.

Anything else you would like us to know about you?
More than just being a stronger student athlete, I am more of a confident person due to everyone at Michigan helping me. So many people have had an impact on my life and that is something I will cherish forever.

Tell me about Lindsay Williams as a gymnast when she walked onto your team?
When we recruited Lindsay we went off of more than just talent. She is an exceptional young lady and student. We just fell in love with her when we met her and had a good feeling about her. When she came into Michigan she had a weakness in her one leg and she has worked so hard to strengthen that leg. Her freshman year she was unable to tumble due to the weakness.

What do you think is the biggest change to Lindsay’s gymnastics in her three years at Michigan?
Lindsay has just worked so hard and has improved so much. Lindsay has increased her skill level and her consistency has gotten so much better. Lindsay has become more of an aggressive gymnast and that is due to the strength she has gained. Her performance quality has also gone up allowing her to be more confident as an athlete.

What was it like as her coach to see her step up and have such great success?
It is incredible to see her succeed! It is very rewarding to see a gymnast work so hard and achieve such success. I love being able to continue to coach her and see her improve and have success.

What do you think Lindsay has reached her full potential?
I absolutely think she has more in the tank! I can’t wait for late summer and fall practices to see what else she has left in her. I would love to see Lindsay train and work on an E level tumbling pass. I think she has improved so much in her tumbling that this could be something she can achieve.

Anything else you would like us to know about Lindsay?
She is a very selfless individual. She is all about the team and what the team needs her to do, and I love that about her. She might not be in the spotlight setting, but she is willing to be put anywhere in the lineup. She is willing to be lead off if needed, knowing that it might not bring as big of a score, if that is what the team needs.
