Breakout Secret Performance: Perea Proves Consistency Is Key
Legacy Elite’s Gabby Perea showed true consistency throughout this year’s Secret Classic, standing out among an amazing junior field and earning fourth place in the all-around.
Perea was out during the later part of last year due to a hamstring injury, which prevented her from competing in the all-around at the 2014 Secret U.S. Classic and P&G Championship. She returned to competition this past May at the national qualifier, winning the competition with an all-around score of 55.00. At the Secret Classic this past weekend, Perea proved that she is top junior contender. While she didn’t have one particularly phenomenal event, she was very consistent on all four.
Perea started on bars with a solid routine, executing notably clean form and a fluid swing for a 13.950. She competed some huge releases, including a Shaposh half, Jaeger and a lovely Pak salto. On beam, Perea matched her bars score with another 13.950. Here, she showed great confidence right from the start, settling in with a front aerial and then absolutely nailing her standing back tuck full. She continued with a difficult series of a back handspring stepout back handspring two foot layout, and finished with a two and a half twist dismount. As we’ve seen in a recent video, Perea is capable a triple full—an upgrade that would set her apart even more.
Moving to floor, Perea displayed difficult but crisp tumbling and came out with a 13.70. She excels at twisting, always keeping her feet glued together and showing a nice line in the air. She opened with a triple full and closed with a very well executed two and a half. In her interview after the meet, Perea said she hopes to add a full-in to her routine for P&Gs.

Perea's extraordinary consistency continued on vault, as she performed a nice Yurchenko full, almost sticking it to earn yet another 13.950. She finished up her impressive meet with a 55.550 total and landed in fourth place out of 37 incredibly talented juniors. Perea was close to home with the competition being held in Region 5, so she had the chance to perform in front of many friends and family members who were cheering loud for her every move.
With the ability to unwaveringly hit her routines, even on a big stage, Perea is surely one to watch for at P&G Championships and into the future. She is planning a few new upgrades for Championships, which will strengthen her D scores, giving her a chance to break into that 14.0 range and also land on the podium.
