Simone Biles earned her third consecutive worlds all-around title at the 2015 World Championships here in Glasgow, Scotland. Biles ended up with a 60.399, Gabby Douglas earned silver with a 59.316, and Romania’s Larisa Iordache took bronze with a 59.107. While the competition results may not be surprising, the event was just as exciting as ever. 

Biles made history tonight as the only woman to win three World all-around titles in a row. The only other female gymnast who has won three (not consecutively) is Svetlana Khorkina. She also broke her own record for number of World Championships gold medals and now has eight. Her 11 total medals passes Alicia Sacramone’s 10 for the most World medals by a U.S. athlete. 

Douglas also made a statement becoming the first reigning Olympic Champion to earn an all-around medal at the World Championships since Yelena Davydova in 1981.

Biles started on vault where she performed her high-flying Amanar. She didn’t have as clean of a landing as usual but still posted a 15.833. 

On bars, she hit one of her best sets on her typically weakest event. She performed huge releases including a piked Tkatchev to a Pak and finished with a tuck full in to post a 14.9. 

On beam, she had a solid start and performed her back handspring layout layout series flawlessly. On her punch front, she had a big wobble, grabbing the beam with one foot in the air. She miraculously saved it and finished her routine strong with a tuck full in, still earning a 14.4. 

Biles had the lead the entire meet and had a great rotation order, finishing on floor where she was last up of the group. She opened with her full twisting double layout but then had a very unusual out-of-bounds mistake on her double layout half out to sissone, which deducted three tenths. She finished strong for a 15.266 to total a 60.399. 

Douglas also had the same rotation, starting out on vault. She nailed a double twisting Yurchenko for a 15.3. On bars, she showed her signature gravity-defying releases including a piked Tkatchev and stalder Shaposhnikova. She finished with an easy-looking double layout for a 15.033. On beam, she had a couple wobbles and missed connections but rocked her standing tuck full to post a 14.4. She finished on floor, smiling through her routine that included a tucked Arabian double front to stag jump and bounding leaps to score a 14.583. 

Iordache came back with a vengeance after Romania failed to qualify for team finals and she suffered two falls in qualifications. She started on beam posting the highest beam score of the day with a 14.766. Her routine included a back handspring full twisting back tuck and a round off back layout to two feet. She added her double twisting double tuck back into her floor routine and earned a 14.475 on floor. She performed a Yurchenko double full for a 15.066 and swung to a 14.8 on bars.

Shang Chunsong of China had a great night but just missed out on the podium, placing fourth with a 58.265. Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland qualified in second but after a fall on beam she ended up fifth with a 57.333. Mai Murakami of Japan came in sixth with a 57.132.
