In this edition of Analyzing the Elites, we are heading over to the bars and taking a look at some incredible low-to-high and high-to-low combinations. These combos include several hugely difficult skills that would be impressive on their own, but the athletes connect them for big bonus and a lovely look.
The long lines and beautiful form is what sets these two athletes apart from the world. USA's Madison Kocian and Russia's Viktoria Komova are both performing an in-bar Shaposh (Komova II) straight to a Pak, and Kocian goes into a stalder Shaposh half (Chow 1/2) while Komova performs a toe-on Shaposh half (Van Leeuwen).
Kocian shows great control when she catches her Pak and pauses before she moves into the Chow 1/2. Meanwhile, Komova's smoothness in her combination is almost mesmerizing and they way she pulls her feet through the bar on her Komova II is second to none.
They both look as if they are just gliding through the air showing impeccable form and grace... After all, they were both part of the four-way tie for gold at Worlds.
Next we have Russia's Maria Paseka and USA's Maggie Nichols also performing amazing combinations between the bars. Paseka starts with a Tkatchev and goes into a Pak straight to a Van Leeuwen. Nichols does a Maloney to a Pak straight into her Van Leeuwen.
They both have very tight form, as you can see legs and feet glued together throughout the combos. They also catch the high bar out of the Van Leeuwen at a good distance from the bar which allows them to swing out of it nicely.
Finally, we have Fan Yilin of China and Kelly Simm of Great Britain who both perform a combo with a Komova II, Pak, and stalder Shaposh (Chow).
Yilin, a gold medalist on the event, begins with a Komova II, and then swings into a Pak straight into a Chow. While she's a smaller gymnast who could potentially struggle with these tough low-to-high connections, Yilin makes it look so easy and does each skill just beautifully.
Simm also starts with a Komova II to a Pak, and then performs a stalder into her Chow.
With four to five D/E level skills in a row, these athletes must be immaculate in their timing, angles, and form in order to do these combinations so well. All of them are among the best in the world when it comes to bar combos, and they will be pushing the boundaries with even more greatness as 2016 arrives.
