Our recent FloFilms documentary features Simone Biles' rise to stardom including her epic 2015. While this series covered many aspects of her life and career, there are always stories and anecdotes that get left on the cutting room floor. In this category, is the 2015 Jesolo Trophy.
Simone Biles was unstoppable in 2015 from the American Cup in March to the World Championships in October, collecting all-around gold medals at every meet she entered.
Unsurprisingly, Simone dominated the 2015 Jesolo Trophy winning the all-around nearly three full points ahead of anyone else. She also won vault, beam, and floor in the event finals. As Simone was slated to compete at the American Cup just a couple weeks before Jesolo, it was a pleasant surprise that she ended up competing in both meets. She recalled Jesolo fondly and saw it as another stepping stone in her path to the 2015 World Championships.
The Jesolo competition is always highly anticipated, as it is often the very first meet of the year for many elites and fans get a look at new skills and routines. In 2015, the return of Olympic Champions Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman added even more hype and excitement. For Biles, this was the first time she would even be in the same competition as Douglas and Raisman since before the London Olympics.
It was also an exciting opportunity to see the Simone, the reigning World Champion, competing on the same team as Douglas and Raisman, reigning Olympic Champions in all-around and floor. Biles noted that it was not only exciting, but also motivating to be training and competing alongside the pair.
While the Douglas Raisman duo looked stunning in their return, they were ultimately no match for queen Biles. Raisman placed third all-around with a 59.1 and Douglas was fourth with a 58.9 behind Biles and Bailie Key.
While Simone's father Ron was able to watch his daughter shine in person, Simone's mother Nellie was with Simone's sister Adria at the Texas State Championships.
Nellie often talks about how, to their family, Simone is "just Simone." She is a sister and a daughter and is treated equally among her siblings. To this effect, Nellie knew it was just as important to support Adria at her gymnastics meet.
Adria competed all-around at the Texas State meet on March 27, posting a 9.3 on beam and a 9.275 on vault. Nellie recalls driving back to their home in Spring, TX the following day and having to make a pit stop to watch Simone compete.
Jesolo proved to be a success for Simone and just another crazy busy weekend in the Biles household.
