Tonight, #23 Southern Utah will play host to #3 Michigan and #44 UC-Davis in an exciting tri-meet. Southern Utah’s scores have steadily improved all season, and they posted their season high last weekend with a 195.975 to clinch the win over BYU and Sacramento State. Meanwhile, Michigan has been hovering close to the top all year and broke the 197 mark in their last two meets. Davis is coming off of a rough meet last weekend where they posted a 192.550. Although they beat Seattle Pacific, they will be looking to minimize falls and boost that number back up to the 194 range that they were at earlier in the season.
Each of these teams have some stand out performers that will be worth keeping an eye on when you watch the competition. We’ve highlighted those gymnasts below and what events we're most looking forward to seeing them on. Be sure to check out the competition tonight - FloGymnastics will be streaming the event LIVE here at 7:00pm MT.
Redshirt junior Stacie Webb has been a strong competitor for Southern Utah, competing on vault, beam and floor. She is super consistent and rarely falters in competition. This season, she has not scored lower than a 9.775 on any of her events, and she boasts season highs of 9.85 on vault, 9.9 on beam and 9.875 on floor. Check out her solid beam routine below from a meet against Utah:
Junior Virginia Brownsell competes on vault and floor for Southern Utah and she’s put up high numbers on both events this season. Her vault is what really stands out for its uniqueness. Brownsell competes a piked Cuervo vault, which has a 10.0 start value. She has already tied her career high of 9.85 three times so far this season. Check out the vault below:
Freshman Yasmine Yektaparast has been very impressive for the Aggies this year, especially on floor exercise, where she has competed in every meet. Her high on the event is a 9.875, and she has scored 9.775 or above in the last three meets. Yektaparast has difficult tumbling and she exudes energy throughout her entire routine. Check out her routine below from the first meet of the season, the NorCal Classic:
Redshirt sophomore Katy Nogaki competes both vault and beam for the Aggies, and she is one of their most consistent competitors. On vault, she has scored 9.8 or higher in the last four meets, and her season high is a 9.825. Nogaki is also very solid on beam. Although she’s had a few falls this season, when she is on, she delivers big numbers. She achieved a new career high last weekend against SPU when she scored a 9.875. Check out her routine below from the NorCal Classic:
Junior Nicole Artz is one of Michigan’s top all-around competitors. She is currently ranked #14 nationally. It’s tough to pick just one event to watch Artz on, because she truly excels at all four, especially on bars, beam and floor. She’s currently ranked #10 on bars and #11 on floor. She’s already tied her career high on floor this year with a 9.975, and she has put up a 9.9 or higher on bars five times this season. Check out her gorgeous bar routine below:
Olivia Karas has been the freshman to watch this year, and she’s put in big numbers for Michigan on all four events as an all-arounder for them. Like fellow teammate Artz, Karas performs brilliantly on all four, and she’s already posted career highs of 9.85 or higher on every event. One of our favorite events to watch her on is floor, where she’s currently ranked #11, tied with Artz. She’s got huge power and lots of personality in this routine, check it below:
