USA Gymnastics Terminates Agreement With Karolyi Ranch
USA Gymnastics issued a statement regarding the Karolyi Ranch, the current National Team Training Center for the women's artistic gymnastics team.
USA Gymnastics announced its decision to terminate its agreement with the Karolyi Ranch, the current National Team Training Center for the women's artistic gymnastics team.
“It has been my intent to terminate this agreement since I began as president and CEO in December," Kerry Perry, president and CEO of USAG, said. "Our most important priority is our athletes, and their training environment must reflect this. We are committed to a culture that empowers and supports our athletes.
The change appears to be effective starting next week as USAG has cancelled the National Team Training Camp originally scheduled for Jan 22-26. USAG's 2018 calendar now has the location next to the January camp as "TBD."
USAG originally backed out of their plans to purchase the Karolyi Ranch in May of 2017, but camps continued to be held at the Ranch into January of 2018.
Last week, Simone Biles came forward as one of the survivors of Larry Nassar's sexual abuse. In her statement, Biles mentioned how painful it would be to return to the Ranch as she trained for the 2020 Olympics.
"It is impossibly difficult to relive these experiences and it breaks my heart even more to think that as I work towards my dream of competing in Tokyo 2020, I will have to continually return to the same training facility where I was abused."
A MoveOn.Org petition had also been circulating that called for USAG to immediately stop events being held at the Ranch.
USA Gymnastics has not yet found a replacement for the Ranch.
"We are exploring alternative sites to host training activities and camps until a permanent location is determined," Perry said. "We thank all those in the gymnastics community assisting in these efforts.”
