To continue our series on the 2016 J.O. National Champions, today we are catching up with Junior F co-champion,
Scott, of Metroplex Gymnastics, tied for gold with Abby Heiskell in the Junior F division with a 38.575. Scott has been a strong contributor to the success of the always impressive Region 3, winning the all-around at regionals this year as well. Scott has committed to the University of Illinois for the 2018-2019 season.
Scott endured a bit of a scare in the week before nationals, hyperextending her knee which shook her up. However, she healed quickly and was determined to compete. More adversity came her way and she woke up with a horrible sore throat on the day of the competition.
After three strong events, starting with bars, she knew she needed to nail her vault to have a shot at gold. She took a step on her first vault and had one last shot.
FloGymnastics: What did it feel like when you finished?
Shaylah Scott: I honestly felt so relieved because I just wanted to be able to say I finished the season, especially since I was in the very last session. I had all my friends texting me results, so I just wanted to be able to be in the same position as all of them.
What did it feel like when they called your name as National Champion?
It was great because people had told me I'd won. But in my mind, I didn't believe it until my name was announced. As soon as they said it, it all became completely real and that I really accomplished a long term goal. Now I can keep pushing to even better than I was that night.
What is your favorite healthy food and favorite junk food?
Asparagus and French fries
What do you like to eat before a competition?
I like to eat something sweet that catches my eye but nothing planned I let my heart decide because to me if you follow your heart you'll succeed no matter what.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I'm more of a 'if you catch me when I'm happy that's good I'm and if you don't I'm probably just not in the mood' person.
What is your favorite day of the week?
Wednesday
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time to relax?
Watch Netflix, sleep, get my nails done, shop

So I guess you could say I didn't feel good going into the meet. But nothing was going to stop Scott.
After three strong events, starting with bars, she knew she needed to nail her vault to have a shot at gold. She took a step on her first vault and had one last shot.
I did my second vault and I stuck it. I was just so happy.
