Yuri van Gelder of the Netherlands has been expelled from the Olympic Games by the Dutch Olympic Committee, according to NUsport.
Following the men's qualifications on Saturday, van Gelder left the Olympic Village and admitted that he consumed alcohol before returning on Sunday. This behavior violates team rules laid out by the Dutch Olympic Committee, and van Gelder is being sent home immediately. At 33, this was his first Olympic Games.
He qualified to the rings final but will no longer compete. His spot will now go to Danny Pinheiro Rodrigues of France who qualified in tenth. Ukraine's Igor Radivilov was in ninth and replaced injured Samir Ait Said.
Maurits Hendriks, the Chef de Mission of the Dutch Olympic team, explains that it was a difficult decision, but one that had to be made.

It was a very difficult decision for us to make. This is terrible for Yuri, but at such a breach of the values within TeamNL, we have no other choice. We stand for excellence with respect to all agreements and rules. Our athletes have an exemplary standard and this behavior is absolutely unacceptable. Yuri has left us no choice.Unfortunately, this is not the first offense for van Gelder. Back in 2009, he lost a year of competition after being suspended for testing positive for cocaine during a competition and later had to withdraw from 2010 World Championships in Rotterdam for another offense of cocaine use.
