Bridgette Caquatto of USA wins 2011 Pan American Games All Around Title

Bridgette Caquatto
of USA and Legacy Elite Gymnastics won the women’s all-around title at the 2011 Pan American Games, making her the seventh consecutive American to win gold in the event.

“This is just amazing,” Caquatto said. “It feels just as amazing as it did the other day when the whole team won first too. I’m just so happy.”

Posting a final score of 55.875, Caquatto joins Shawn Johnson (2007), Chellsie Memmel (2003), Morgan White (1999), Shannon Miller (1995), Stephanie Woods (1991) and Sabrina Mar (1987), as the seventh U.S. woman to earn this Pan Am title.

Claiming silver was the young Guatemalan standout Ana Sofia Gomez who led the all around after the first day of competition. She vaulted a yurchenko double twist to score 14.525 and she earned the highest beam score of the competition, 14.350, to finish her day with a 55.425 all around score. Kristina Vaculik of Canada took the bronze medal with 54.775.

In the first rotation, Caquatto was first up on floor posting a score of 13.400 with a front double full to front layout. She watered down her vault to a clean and easy yurchenko full to score 14.075, then went to bars where she nailed a huge routine packed with release moves to score a 14.725, the highest of the competition. This shot her up to first place heading into the final event. Caquatto fought to stay on the beam on her back handspring layout step out series and finished well to earn a 13.675 and the all around title. Click here to watch Caquatto's bar routine.

Peng Peng Lee of Canada was in the hunt for a medal but hit her feet on the ground on her Bhardwaj transition (full twisting pak) on bars. Elsa Garcia of Mexico came back from a fall on her beam series to finish 5th place in front of the home crowd. Brandie Jay of USA finished in 6th place in her first international competition highlighted by a 14.825 for her yurchenko double twist on vault.
