Whittenburg, Kimble lead junior men after Prelims
Donnell Whittenburg (Ultimate) and Marvin Kimble (Swiss Turners) lead their respective age groups after the first day of junior men's competition at the 2012 Visa Championships.
Whittenburg is in front of the 16-18 age group, posting a 86.2 all-around score, highlighted by an incredible handspring-double front vault that he nearly stuck (16.05). Whittenburg continued to impress on the floor exercise, where he mounted with a double Arabian half-out and threw an interesting front layout to double front side pass within his routine (14.45).
Second-place Akash Modi (84.35) had a good day, putting up the second-highest scores of the day on floor (14.5), pommels (13.9), parallel bars (14.4) and high bar (13.85). Sean Melton, last year's champion in the 14-15 age group, currently sits in third (84.05).
Kimble leads the 14-15 age group, scoring 84.85 with a healthy cushion over second-place Hunter Justus (82.6). Kimble showed some big tricks, including a handspring-double front vault with too much power (15.6) and a double layout dismount on floor exercise (14.2). The junior men's competition concludes on Saturday at 6 p.m.
