RESULTS: Catherine Lyons wins British Espoir Championships
Catherine Lyons of Europa Gymnastics Club wins the all around title at the 2013 British Espoir Championships with a score of 56.300. Teal Grindle of Saphire placed second with a 55.650 followed by Lucy Stanhope of Liverpool in third with a 51.250.
It was an exciting battle between two second year Espoir gymnasts, Europa’s Catherine Lyons and Sapphire’s Teal Grindle at the 2013 Espoir British Championships held at Emirates Arena Glasgow. Although both gymnasts had to count falls on the bars they were a level above the rest of the field. It was Catherine in the end who came out on top with 56.200. Her well executed full twisting Yurchenko scored her a 14.050 on the vault with a huge 14.750 on the beam and 14.350 for her beautifully choreographed floor routine.
Teal Grindle was not far behind in silver with 55.650. Teal’s beam was outstanding scoring her the highest score of the day with 14.850 with a routine packed full of difficulty that included a flick full twist and double pike dismount.
Taking the bronze with 50.250 was the City of Liverpool’s rising star, Lucy Stanhope. Only a first year senior, Lucy showed some impressive work, including a beautiful piked Jaeger on the bars to secure herself the final podium position. Watch our video interview with Catherine Lyons after winning the National title:
Close behind in fourth was Scotland’s own Louise McColgan from Largs (50.150), who again shows lots of promise as a first year gymnast with great execution but unfortunately lacked the difficulty to challenge the front runners.
It was Wales Maisie Methuen who finished in 5th with South Durham’s Claudia Barkes in 6th.
Catherine Lyons said after : “I’m really happy to have won the title. I started off on floor and was quite nervous as there is high expectation of me on that piece because of my artistry, but I managed to cope with the nerves and produce one of my best ever routines which was a great way to start the competition. Likewise on vault things went really well. Bars I just had to keep it tight, I under-rotated slightly on dismount but the score was still good and keep me in contention. Finally on beam I knew I had to stay clean and then there was a slightly nervy wait for the scores to come up and once I saw my name in first I was really, really happy. It’s been a long year and to end by winning this competition is fantastic”
