With the Commonwealth Games beginning in just ten days, the athlete village has officially opened its doors to athletes and officials arriving in Glasgow. The day was marked by official ceremonies and a performance of dance and theatre by the National Youth Theatre.

The athlete village will have several “chieftains,” or local mayors, to oversee welcome ceremonies for the 71 competing teams, host VIP visits, and carry out tours of the village. One of these chieftains is retired Scottish gymnast Steve Frew, who represented both Scotland and Great Britain in the international gymnastics scene during the early 2000’s. One of his career highlights was winning gold on the rings at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the first gymnastics gold for Scotland in the history of the Commonwealth Games. Frew also served as a commentator during the 2012 London Olympics.
