The Washington Huskies brought their A-game to the Huntsman Center this past weekend, posting their season high of 196.250 in front of 15,500 Red Rocks fans while Utah finished at 197.125, breaking the 197 mark for the third week in a row.
Washington started out strong, posting 48.875 on bars, led by 9.85s from junior Kaitlyn Duranczyk and senior Allison Northey as well as a career high of 9.75 from junior Jessica Nesis. Meanwhile, Utah posted two 9.9s on vault from seniors Breanna Hughes and Kailah Delaney to tie their season high of 49.25. Senior Kassandra Lopez joined the lineup, vaulting for the first time since 2012, saying after the meet that it was very exciting to give it another shot.
The Gymdogs built off that momentum as they entered the second round, posting a season high of 49.075 on vault. All five competitors earned their season highs: 9.875 from Northey, 9.85 from junior Alex Yacalis, 9.825s from sophomores Joslyn Goings and Emily Liddle, 9.7 from junior Stephanie Stowe. Over on bars, freshman Sabrina Schwab led her team with her career high of 9.925. Lopez and Hughes followed with 9.875s, along with 9.825 from sophomore Tiffani Lewis and 9.8 from sophomore Samantha Partyka.
Washington trailed behind Utah 97.95 to 98.55 and erupted on the floor. Their incredible performance consisted of 9.725 from Goings, 9.825s from Liddle and sophomore Zoey Schaefer, 9.85 from Duranczyk, 9.875 from Yacalis, led by Northey's career high of 9.925. Utah scored 49.05 on beam, led by two 9.85s from junior Baely Rowe and sophomore Maddy Stover. Their lead was cut close, finishing the third round 147.6 to 147.25.
But with encouragement from their roaring fans, the Red Rocks came back to score a stellar 49.525 on floor. The GymDawgs put up a valiant showing on beam, with Northey's 9.9 winning the event, but Utah's momentum on the other side only grew with each routine. Freshman MaKenna Merrell kicked off the event to earn 9.825, followed by 9.925 from Lewis, a career high of 9.825 from Stover, 9.875 from Delaney, 9.925 from Schwab, and - to the delight of the screaming Huntsman Center - a winning and career high of 9.975 from Hughes.
Her score was enough to send Utah over the 197 and win her the all-around, in her career high of 39.575. Northey finished second, right on her heels with her career high of 39.55.
This was a great show from the GymDawgs, who will have a tough meet against UCLA next weekend. As for Utah, they'll need to bring everything they've got as they hit the road for the next three weeks, going up against Stanford, California, and Michigan.
