Terry Walker, one of Simone Biles' coaches, is leaving his role as the head girls team coach at World Champions Centre (WCC) in Houston for a position at the Christchurch School of Gymnastics (CSG) in Christchurch, New Zealand. He will be the club women's artistic gymnastics code manager, according to The Press.
In 2014, the Biles opened their own gym, WCC, and Walker left Cypress Gymnastics to helm the process with his wife, Tamara. He became the head team coach, and worked with international elites as well as levels 6-10 in the J.O. program. In addition to Tamara's role as team director, she coached international elites and levels 6-10, as well.
Walker has coached at the elite and international level for 28 years and will surely bring a wealth of knowledge to the New Zealand program.
CSG underwent an involved recruitment process and unanimously decided to appoint Walker. CSG's chief executive Avril Enslow spoke to the decision:
CSG further stated that Walker, a strong bars technician who will bring fresh ideas, will help build the women's artistic program on every level.
Walker will mentor impressive New Zealand athletes Courtney McGregor and Charlotte Sullivan, who are heading to college on athletic scholarships this year. But first, McGregor will represent New Zealand as an individual in Rio.
The Walkers and their four children will begin their new journey in Christchurch later this month. Biles will continue to train with coach Aimee Boorman, WCC gymnastics program director.
