Sam Mikulak of the USOTC leads the senior men's all-around standings with an 85.15 after the first night of competition at the 2018 US Gymnastics Championships, in Boston, MA. Akash Modi of Stanford posted the second highest all-around score with an 84.1 and Allan Bower of Oklahoma followed in third with an 83.85.

Mikulak had some great events but also had a couple falls and minor mistakes. While Mikulak wasn't perfect, his strong performance along with his high difficulty scores put him at the top of the pack.

Besides the all-around lead, Mikulak also holds top floor and p-bars scores. His highest score of the night came on floor where he was solid and clean for a 14.75. He opened with his back 2.5 to double front and closed with a triple full. On p-bars, Mikulak posted a 14.3 after a superb set and a stuck dismount.

Modi was consistent throughout the day, hitting all six of his events. He posted a 14.3 for his strong Kasamatsu 1.5 vault, the event that started off his night. His highest score was on floor after an excellent routine including a piked double front and a triple full to finish.

Less than three tenths behind Modi, Bower was third after a solid day. He posted an impressive 14.8 on pommel horse, a 14.35 on vault, and a 14.15 on floor. After the fourth rotation, Bower had the all-around lead and he was still in second heading into the final rotation. However, in the final rotation he struggled through his high bar routine, only posting a 12.95, which moved him to third.

Reigning national champion Yul Moldauer, competing with a back injury, struggled on night one but still posted an 82.7, which puts him in sixth after day one.

Alec Yoder from Ohio State posted an impressive 15.15 on pommel horse, the highest score of the night, and totaled an 83.4 for fifth all-around. Trevor Howard, also from Ohio State, leads the rings ranking with a 14.55, Anton Stephenson from the University Of Nebraska leads vault with a 14.8, and Colin Van Wicklen from Cypress leads high bar with a 13.95.

The women take the floor on Friday for their first day of competition and the men follow on Saturday with their final day of competition.
