...
WASHINGTON - The George Washington gymnastics team scored 193.425 points to narrowly edge East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival North Carolina and win the sixth annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center.
The win marked the first time the Colonials have won their premier home event since the 2002 season and the first time since the event was renamed in honor of late alumna Lindsey Ferris ('01) in 2007.
North Carolina, last year's Lindsey Ferris Invitational champions, finished in second place with 192.950. The Tar Heels were followed by Cornell (190.300), Penn (189.575) and Temple (187.500).
Senior Stephanie Stoicovy won the all-around crown in the event for the second year in a row after finishing with a score of 38.975, just ahead of junior teammate Betsy Zander (38.875).
Stoicovy turned in the top floor exercise of the afternoon, winning the event with a 9.875. She added a 9.775 on vault (t-4th), a career-high 9.775 on uneven bars (t-5th) and 9.600 on balance beam (t-11th).
Zander turned in a fine all-around performance on Sunday, led by a career-high 9.750 on the uneven bars. She added a third-place finish on balance beam (9.750), a fourth-place showing on floor exercise (9.750) and a 9.625 on vault.
Following the meet, Zander was awarded the "Attitude is Everything Award," which is annually given to the GW gymnast who best exemplifies the team spirit and leadership qualities of gymnastics alumna Ferris, who passed away in January 2006.
Elena Corcoran got off to a strong start in her sophomore season, tying for second place on her first career floor exercise routine with a 9.775. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native also tied for fourth on the vault with 9.725 in addition to a 9.525 on balance beam.
The Colonials' best event of the afternoon was the floor exercise, where they placed five out of six routines in the top-six. Junior Taylor Henderson and senior Nefertiti Roy tied for sixth place with a 9.725, while Zander (9.750), Corcoran and Stoicovy each placed in the top-four.
GW was also strong on the uneven bars, where they posted a team score of 48.675. In addition to strong routines from Stoicovy and Zander, junior Taylor Henderson turned in a career-high score of 9.750. Freshman Taylor Redmond (9.725) and senior Kayla Carto (9.675) also turned in strong routines to help the Colonials to their best uneven bars score since March 21, 2008.
The Colonials and Tar Heels will renew their rivalry next weekend, as North Carolina welcomes GW and William & Mary to Carmichael Arena for a tri-meet on Sunday at 2 p.m. The meet marks the second of five meets that will feature the Colonials and Tar Heels this season.
