2013 Winter Cup Challenge - Preliminaries
Stanford's Eddie Penev leads the way after the 2013 Winter Cup prelims.
LAS VEGAS, Feb. 7, 2013 – Eddie Penev of Rochester, N.Y./Stanford, posted an 83.800 in the all-around to lead the standings after the first of two preliminary sessions as the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge today at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. Competition continues this evening at 6:30 p.m. Pacific time.
Akash Modi of Morganville, N.J./Monmouth, 83.750, and Sean Senters of Center Valley, Pa./Stanford, 83.050, finished second and third, respectively.
Penev posted his high score of the day, a 15.150, on vault, where he performed a Yurchenko half-on, front double full off. He recorded scores of 14.500, floor; 13.200, pommel horse; 13.650, still rings; 13.900, parallel bars; and 13.400, high bar to complete his competition.
Penev is currently a senior on the Stanford men's gymnastics team and has competed internationally for Bulgaria in the past. However, he is now hoping to make the U.S. National team. He's a 3-time NCAA National Champion.

De los Angeles Shocks Danell Leyva Day 1 of Winter Cup!

After two preliminary sessions of the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge men's national competiion, Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./University of Michigan, is the surprise all-around leader with a score of 85.800 over 2012 Olympic All Around Bronze medalist Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics, 85.500. 2012 Olympic floor finalist Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./University of Oklahoma, 85.400, sits in third place after a fall on parallel bars.
Competition concludes with the Winter Cup Challenge finals on Saturday at 7 p.m. Pacific time, where the top 42 athletes according to the men's program points system will compete.
De los Angeles is currently in his sophomore season at the University of Michigan and is a former SCATS club teammate of Michigan National Champion and Olympian Sam Mikulak who withdrew from the competition.
De los Angeles started the night scoring 14.500 on pommel horse, 14.250 on still rings and 13.900 on vault. On the parallel bars, de los Angeles performed a tucked Belle before dismounting with a double pike to score 13.850. In the fifth rotation, he scored 13.850 on the horizontal bar, executing laid out and straddled Tkatchevs. Finishing the competition on the floor exercise with a triple twist dismount, he posted his highest score of the evening, a 15.450, to move into the all-around lead.
Leyva, the 2012 Olympic all-around bronze medalist, began competition on parallel bars where he is a former World Champion. He competed an upgraded routine that included a peach to one bar and a double front dismount for a 15.200, his best score of the evening. On the high bar, Leyva showed his trademark layout Kovacs to post a 15.150. He posted scores of 14.500, floor; 12.900, pommel horse; 13.800, still rings; and 13.950, vault. Leyva will have significant room to improve on pommel horse night two after falling on a travel tonight.
Beginning competition on floor exercise, Dalton, who finished fifth on the event at the Olympics, mounted with an Arabian double layout. His score, a 15.650, was the highest score of the competition on any event. He posted scores of 12.700, pommel horse; 14.650, still rings; 14.900, vault; 14.200, parallel bars; and 13.300, high bar, to complete his competition.
Session one leader, Eddie Penev of Rochester, N.Y./Stanford University, finished fourth in the combined all-around standings with an 83.500 total.
Performances at the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge will help determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team through the 2013 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15-18.
The eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic squad retain their spots on the national team. The remaining seven spots will be determined based on the following criteria: the top two ranked all-around athletes who are not already on the senior national team; two based on the National Team Points System; two athletes selected by the Men’s Program Committee; and one selected by the national team coordinator.

2013 Winter Cup Challenge - Finals
2012 Olympian Jake Dalton posted a two-day total of 173.250 to win the 2013 Winter Cup.
LAS VEGAS, Feb. 9, 2013 – 2012 Olympian Jake Dalton of Reno, Nev./University of Oklahoma, posted a two-day, combined all-around total of 173.250 to capture the all-around crown at the 2013 Winter Cup Challenge today inside the Las Vegas (Nev.) Sports Center. Adrian de los Angeles of Long Beach, Calif./University of Michigan, 172.400, and Danell Leyva of Miami/Universal Gymnastics, 171.950, finished second and third, respectively.
During tonight's all-around competition, Dalton scored 87.850, de los Angeles posted 86.600, and Leyva tallied 86.450.
Dalton and de los Angeles came down to the wire, having traded the top spot in the standings throughout the evening. In the final rotation, the two dismounted their respective events moments apart from one another. Dalton's 14.500 on the horizontal bar edged de los Angeles, who posted a 13.300 on the pommel horse.
"I had a few mistakes in night one, so it was nice to clean up a few things tonight. Coming away with the win is always good. It gives me a little more confidence and helps me get ready for the American Cup," Dalton said. "Everything kind of goes crazy after the Olympics, so it's great to be able to get back into the same cycle."
Dalton began competition on the floor exercise with a 15.600 after mounting with a laidout Arabian double. Next, he recorded scores of 13.000, 15.000 and 14.750 on pommel horse, still rings and vault, respectively. On the parallel bars, he posted a 15.000 before heading to the high bar in the sixth rotation. Dalton also won the floor exercise and still rings individual titles with two-day totals of 31.250 and 29.650, respectively.
Leader after night one, de los Angeles started on the still rings, where he dismounted with a full-twisting double layout to score 14.350. On the vault, his Kasamatsu one-and-a-half earned him a 14.700. He posted scores of 15.100, parallel bars; 13.500, high bar; 15.650, floor; and 13.300, pommel horse.
Leyva, the 2012 Olympic all-around bronze medalist, posted his best score of the night on the vault, where his nearly stuck Kasamatsu one-and-a-half earned a 15.050. He also posted a 14.600 on high bar, a 14.400 on floor, a 13.150 on pommel horse, a 14.400 on still rings and a 14.850 on the parallel bars. Leyva, who is the 2011 World parallel bars champion, won the parallel bars (30.050) and high bar (29.750) individual titles.
Michael Newburger of Austin, Texas/Ohio State University, won the pommel horse title with a combined score of 30.300, while Eddie Penev of Rochester, N.Y./Stanford University, picked up the vault crown, also scoring 30.300.
Following the competition, de los Angeles, Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y./U.S. Gymnastics Development Center, Sean Melton of Orlando, Fla./U.S. Olympic Training Center, Akash Modi of Morganville, N.J./Monmouth, Brandon Wynn of Columbus, Ohio/Ohio State University, Glen Ishino of Santa Ana, Calif./University of California - Berkeley, and Penev were named to the U.S. national team, along with all eight members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
